Mrs de Castro is known to many L New Zealand soldiers, who served in Egypt, as she was the first woman to i receive permission from the Com-mander-in-Chief to go to Ismailia after 1 the evacuation of Gallipoli, and, at Ismailia, she opened the first'canteen I for the soldiers, the formal opening r being performed by Sir Andrew Rus- [ sell. Before then, she was lady superintendent Of the British Soldiers’ Club in Esbekiah gardens, Cairo. In i 1917 Mrs de Castro returned to New r Zealand, and at Wellington met no . fewer than 56 transports, and welcomed home the soldiers at the Returned Soldiers’ Club. Later, Mrs .de i Castro attended a Peace Conference . at The Hague, and while there was so much dismayed by the disunity amongst nations, that she returned to ' London and offered to go to Australia ! and New Zealand to found the Eng- , lish Speaking Union, Her offer was ac- , cepted. The first branch was'formed by her in Wellington, and then she I went to Australia and founded branches in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth. A possession greatly treasured [ by Mrs de Castro is a gold-mobnted , fountain pen presented to her by the executive of the English Speaking Union in London, in 1927. Mrs de - Castro, who is a much-travelled > woman, has been greatly impressed by the beauty of the Botanic gardens ’ in Christchurch, which she says are, ■ next to Kew Gardens, the most beautiful she has visited and she does not [ think she has seen anywhere a display , of begonias as fine as that in the bei gonia house in the Christchurch gar- ; dens.
