i RANGIORA UNEMPLOYMENT Congratulations on his (election to the Mayoralty were extended to Mr C. W. Tyler by Mr C. S. Ayres for the Ranglora Unemployment Committee at the meeting of the executive held yesterday morning. There were present Messrs Tyler (in the chair), Ayres, J. Ri Wilkinson, G. E. H. Davis (certifying officer), and H. M. Chappell (assistantcertifying officer). An application from a worker for assistance on his own property and a similar request from another for further aid were held over pending further information.' It was decided to write to the Unemployment Board again about the placing of Maoris on sustenance. One newly-registered worker was placed on the Ashley river protective works and another on sustenance. The case of a third was held over for further investigation. A meeting of the general committee was arranged for Monday, February 3. ; Personaf The resignation of Mr W, Lewis from the superintendence of tie Sunday School owing to the morning hour of meeting not being convenient for him was accepted/ with regret by the Session of John Knox -Presbyterian Church at a meeting on Sunday. Appreciation of Mr Lewis's services was recorded, and he was thanked for the efficient manner in which he had conducted the school during hia term of office. A motion of sympathy with Mrs W. A. Rowse and relatives in the death of Mr Rowse was carried in silence by the executive of the Rangiora Unemployment Committee at its meeting yesterday morning. As Mayor of Rangiora, Mr Rowse was chairman of the committee, and appreciation of his services was expressed. Morgan Pennant Cricket Matches Points to be awarded in the North Canterbury Cricket Sub-Association's Morgan pennant competition have been amended, and are as follows; Outright win, eight points; win on the first innings, five points; tie, four points; draw, two points. Presbyterian Church Session Reference to the death in Auckland of Mr James Carmichael was made at a meeting of the Session of John Knox Presbyterian Church on Sunday. The Rev. J. A. F. Watson presided. During a long period of residence in Rangiora, Mr Carmichael gave faithful service to the church as an elder and a member of the board of managers. A motion of sympathy with Mrs Carmichael and family was carried in silence. A similar motion was accorded Mr W. Carson Wilson in the death of his sister. Reforming Roadway Borough workmen are engaged on the reforming of Edward street. The foundations are being consolidated, and it is possible that the street will later be tar-sealed. Refreshment Stall Demolished After having served for 60 years, the refreshment stall at the Rangiora railway station was demolished yesterday. With the speeding up of the services, through trains do not stay at Rangiora as long as they did formerly and passengers do not have the same opportunity of patronising the stall, so that its business has declined until the proprietor decided not to renew his lease. The stall has been managed by only two firms. It was opened by Mr W. A. Burt, who was in charge until Mr J. Marshall took over control 16 years ago. . Waikuku Beach Gala Proceeds An increase of about £6O on that ifor the 1934 gathering, the net profit of the Waikuku Beach Improvement Association's gala held on Boxing Day, 1935, was £l7B 19s 2d. Gate takings showed an Increase, and the proceeds from general sales and sports were also better.- A balance-sheet will be presented to members of the association and cottage holders at a meeting of the association at the beach on •Saturday evening. Council Vacancy Acceding to ihe request of a deputation which waited upon him last evening Mr C. J. Smith, a prominent business man, consented to nomination for the seat on the Rangiora Borough Council made vacant by the election of Mr C. W. Tyler to the mayoralty. The deputation consisted of 17 representative burgesses, including the Mayor and several members of the council. Mr R. Mcintosh asked Mr Smith to allow his nomination to go forward. The deputation, he said, was confident that he was the right man for the position and it was unlikely that he would be opposed for the seat. Mr Smith expressed his appreciation of the representative nature of the deputation, and said he realised that he had a definite duty towards the town. He had no hesitation in acceding to the request and would gladly take his share of the responsibilities of the council, - Regent Theatre Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's brilliant comedy, "Forsaking AH Others," will be presented to-night at the Regent Theatre * (Town Hall), Rangiora, This picture proved popular when shown in Christchurch. Clark Gable, Joan Crawford, and Robert Montgomery are perfectly cast in this delightful comedy of errors. Others in the cast are Billie Burke and Charles Butterworth. On Thursday next George O'Brien will appear in something new and refreshing in outdoor stories, "The Cowboy Millionaire." There is plenty of action and thrills, and the dialogue is bright, "That's a Good Girl," starring Jack Buchanan and Elsie Randolph, will be presented on Saturday. Seats may be reserved at Watson's. The Weather The weather so far this year has been most disappointing. There have been seven wet days, The heaviest fall was on January 14, when 30 points were recorded.
