PERSONAL Captain J. Plowman and Mr H. Fletcher left yesterday on a motoring tour to the Southern Lakes. Mr F. W. Foster, conservator of forests for the Nelson district, is visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs W. T. Foster, Reserve terrace. , Harbour Light Theatre -r The story of “Black Sheep,” a merry and exciting drama which will be screened at the Harbour Light Theatre this afternoon and evening and to-mor-row evening, takes place upon a transAtlantic liner. Here six passengers, all of them "crooks” of various types, are thrown together, each trying to outwit the others. “Black Sheep” has an exceptionally strong cast, headed by Edmund Lowe, Claire Trevor, Eugene Pallette, Herbert Mundin, and Ford Sterling. A comedy and newsreel will also be screened. A special attraction to-night and to-morrow night will be the appearance on the stage of ; Miss Nita Rosslyn, “the Girl in Red.” Miss Rosslyn will tell of some of her experiences in cycling round the world and will sing several popular nifmbers. Borough Council The Lyttelton Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr F. E. Sutton), Crs. R. Fenton, J. N. Neville, G. S. Morris, A. G. Sinclair, T. B. Hempstalk, J. D. Sargentina, W. T. Foster,, and W. W. Toy. The Canterbury Yacht and MotorBoat Club applied for a donation towards the cost of sending the Lyttelton Cornwell Cup crew to Auckland. It was decided to make a grant of £2 2s. Mr S. N. Maffey’s offer of 5s for the right to cut cocksfoot on the old Lyttelton road between the barracks site and Evans Pass was accepted. A letter was received from the Lyttelton Unemployed Workers’ Union asking the council to co-operate with the union in forming a deputation to the Minister for Employment regarding the alleged allocation of short time by the local certifying officer. The Mayor said the men were given extra work on the understanding that they would not be penalised. They were penalised. The certifying officer was only carrying out the .instructions of the Unemployment Board. On the motion of Cr. Sinclair, the Mayor was appointed to interview the Minister regarding the matter. The Lyttelton District High School playground committee if the council would be prepared to take the responsibility of administering the affairs of the children’s playground, provided the Education Department was Willing to vest the property in the council. The by-laws and legal committee recommended that the committee be informed that the council was prepared to take over the administration of the playground on the conditions stated. The waterworks committee reported that the Heathcote County Council had •offered to enter into an agreement for the supply of water to Heathcote Valley for five years at Is 2d for 1000 gallons, and asked that the necessary agreement be drawn up for completion. The report was adopted. The Town Clerk (Mr P. Hobbs) was granted leave to attend the annual con- 1 * ference of the Town Clerks’ Institute at Napier in March. Pursuant to previous notice, Cr. Toy moved that the resolution passed by the council that the shower-baths at Corsair Bay be disconnected, be rescinded. He said that the council, in deciding to disconnect the showers, had been acting under a misapprehension. The council had been led to believe that the showers had been interfered with and that there had been gross wastage of water. The motion was carried unanimously. Twenty-four applications, were received for a vacancy on the street maintenance staff. A, Wyatt was appointed.
