SWIMMING

CANTERBURY RECORD BROKEN D.ill. -SYMES IN BRILLIANT < FORM The existing 220 yards freestyle re- - cord for Canterbury of 2min 29sec was reduced by two and three-fifths seconds by p/H. Symes, of the ElmwOod •Club, last- evening in the tepid baths at the annual* carnival of the ChristchurchUnited Swimming Club. This gives Symes the distinction of being a tripletitle holder, as he already has the existing'so yards and 100 yards records to his credit. The attempt was made in conjunction with the heat of the 220 yards handicap, arrangements having been made before the race to have special timekeepers recording his swim. But not even his staunchest supporters thought that he would reduce the record by as much as two and three-fifths seconds.

D. P. Lindsay, a joint holder with A. T. Stokes of the previous record, started several seconds in front of Symes and kept him going hard all the way. Some doubt was expressed after the race whether Symes could claim the title as" he had left from a handicap mark, but Symes said later in the evening that he had notified the authorities that he would make an attempt on the record, arid had arranged for special timekeepers to be present. The swimming generally was of a particularly high standard, the greater part of the programme being comprised of inter-club events which brought out the best of the club ' swimmers in Christchurch. Consequently the pubhe, of which there was a fairly large attendance, was treated, to a good night's entertainment.

More than the usual, interest was taken in the relay races,- the first of which was for the Tomkinson Cup, presented by the late Mr J. Tomkinson for competition among surf clubs in aid round Christchurch. This was won by Taylor's Mistake from last years holders, the North Beach Surf Club.

The Hollander Cup, for the interclub relay-race, went to East Christchurch, Christchurch-United being the runners-up. The.Batchelor Cup, presented by Mr N. S. Batchelor for a relay race among pms, was won again by the New Zea- !■ T fL armers ' Co-operative Association, Ltu. ■:.-..'
