Ocean Singer WinsIt was with a good finishing run that Ocean Singer won the Birchwood Novice Handicap. Henry Dawson made- the running to the straight from Western Song and Wynwood. In the Straight Ocean Singer came with a good run and beat Wynwood decisively. Waiau Maid was a fair third and Henry Dawson next. Easy for Favourite’ After breaking practically at the start of the Nightcaps Harness Trot the pronounced favourite, Stirling Lady, ran to the front at the end of six furlongs, and gave nothing else a chance over the last couple of furlongs. Leitrim, who soon ran into second place, beat John Desborough
just as easily for second money, and Egiinton was close up fourth. The others were outclassed. A Short Price Wall Street was backed down to odds on for the Woodlaw Handicap, and completely justified confidence. Red Treasure made the early running from Dazzling Eyes and Wall Street Wynwood made a fast run at the far turn and led into the straight, but had no chance with Wall Street, who beat him going away. Dazzling Eyes was close up third, and there was then a gap to Red Treasure. Favourite - Unlucky Shock was the only withdrawal from the Wairio Cup, and Galleon was sent out a pronounced favourite. Island
Linnet took up the running from Bay Biddy, Mayam, and Impala. With half a mile to go Honest Maid moved up into second position and beat Island Linnet decisively in the run home. Galleon, who got a very bad run, was close up third, followed by Bay Biddy and King Willow. Galleon was, very unlucky. An Excellent Display Parasang and Black Banner disputed the lead for over two miles in the Forde Memorial Steeplechase, with Money Mine running in third position. Black Banner was first to
Lu, Sir Abb, Master Norval, and Bonny Gay in that order next. Day Wind is on the improve, and should go on to further successes, while Lagoon was responsible for a solid performance. Lncidus Prevails The each way favourite, Solaria showed speed in the Parawai Handicap, but weakened in the straight to finish third. Lucidus was always within striking distance of the leaders and smothered the opposition to win by two lengths from Tin Lap, who came home well to beat Solaria by half a length. Wahine Reihi was right up fourth, with King Ford, Puriri Park, and Coronis in a bunch next. Coronis was caught in the tapes and carried the cord in her bridle throughout the race. A Narrow Verdict After waiting in behind the leaders till the straight was reached, Abbey Feale finished on solidly to win the Farewell Handicap by the narrow margin of half a head from Professional. The latter did not have the best of the running, and was unlucky. Mungacre was a creditable third, with Sir Tommy fourth. Sir Tommy did' not begin smartly, but quickly ran to the front only? to fade at the end. Winlona'was fifth, the nearest she got, with Triune'and Sing Lee next. Finished -Well The v/ell supported Ringshot finished strongly to win - the County Hack Handicap from Gay Egypt. It looked- as if Gay Egypt would win when he ■ ran up to Wahineroa and' Libra at the home turn. However, Ringshot finished a shade too well. Gayi" Egypt was unlucky, as he was squeezed gt the Start. Dutch Girl wad fourth m front of Barograph.
retire, and Parasang stayed on strongly to beat Money Mine, who spoilt a good winning chanoe by hitting the second to last fence and losing several lengths. Black Banner was third and Ecclefechan was the only other to finish. Parasang made only one mistake and gave an excellent display. Red Terror fell over the wing of the first fence and brought down Trisox. Never In Doubt All Humbug was a solid favourite for the Wairaki Handicap, and he proved the best of good things. Great Shot and Beam made the early running from Tauramai and All Humbug. With three furlongs to go All Humbug ran into second place behind Beam and fairly romped away in the straight Leading Boy came from wen back to finish third, and Enwood was a poor fourth. Tauramai faded badly in the straight. The Saddle Trot Pola Negri was always well placed in the Ohai Saddle Trot, and was first into the straight from Night Voyage and Stirling Lady, who was penalised 48 yards for her early success. When it came to the finish Pola Negri easily accounted for Night Voyage. Stirling Lady stopped/ into third place, and McGlusky was next. Dual Success Wall Street, penalised 51b for his previous win, scored another decisive victory in the Bates Memorial Handicap, Amelita tried to’ win all the way and was followed into the straight by Johnny, Wall Street, and Bay Biddy. In the run home Wall Street challenged strongly and beat Amelita by half a length. Bay Biddy, who was unlucky in the running, was a fair, third, and Johnny stopped badly into fourth place. This was the winner’s third success on end. He is a five-year-old chestnut gelding by Night Raid from Easy Street.
TEENTHAM NOTES
INTERESTING GALLOPS KINNOULL SHAPES, WELL [THE PRESS Special Service.]
WELLINGTON, January 18. Heavy and continuous westerly rain softened the tracks for Work at Trentham this morning, but it lifted before any galloping was done, and the weather later became fine with a drying wind. The No. 1 grass was available for fast work and it provided good going though a trifle soft and on the slow side. Proceedings were more interesting on account of several visitors being amongst the workers. Red Sun and Sunee had their usual work-out over a mile. Sunee, with the outside running, again finished in front, but Red Sun was conceding plenty of weight. The time was Imin 46sec. Brabant worked well against Te Rangitumau over half a mile in SlJsec and could have done better. Cuddle pulled very hard in front of Might for six furlongs in a mile and a quarter gallop, but Might drew up and beat her home fairly comfortably in 2min 14sec, the last mile in Imin 47sec. Cuddle is not at her best in going as it was, but Might worked very well. Acceptable worked over half a mile at a good three-quarter pace. Sansfoy was too good for Ayresleigh over five furlongs in Imin 4|sec, the last half in 51 Jsec. , Sansfoy will be ridden by R, Savage. Princess Doreen completely reversed her showing of Thursday morning by running away from After Money at the end of seven in Imin Slsec.* The .time was very good for the state of the going, and she did it well. After Money did not show up too well, but was not knocked about. The Hawera two-year-olds Notium and Gay Chief did easy work on the two-year-old track. Shy worked well over half a mile with Chile finishing well in front without being after time. Deficit, Cricket, and Sea Wrack sprinted half a mile smartly together in 50sec. Deficit shaped best, but they all went well and Sea Wrack impressed as a likelv youngster. Gay Broney and Queen of Song ran a very leisurely mile Cn imia siseci taking 55sec for the last half. •Boomerang shaded Vineo over four in 52§sec, and (worked well. Double Gift was much too good for Going Gay at the end of half a mile in 52£ sec. Double Gift has grown into a solid filly and worked well. R. Savage will ride her. Hine Ra put a big break early on Darecourt in a six furlongs gallop, but Darecourt drew up in the straight and
finished a good effort in front in Imin 18£ sec. He is an improved hack. Kinnoull and Superex were not knocked about in a comfortable mile in Imin 49sec, the former going the better. Some trouble was anticipated in getting Kinnoull to go off, and Wonderful went off with him, but his services were hardly necessary. Kinnoull has grown since he was here in October, and although he may be short of racing, he is not carrying superfluous condition. Bon Tray was given an easy five furlongs, the last half in 54sec. No rider has been engaged for him yet. Up till the time of the closing of its office to-day the Wellington Racing Club- had received no scratchings for next week’s meeting.
