ATHLETICS

NEW YEAR OPENS WELL GLIMPSES OF BRILLIANT FORM CANTERBURY CHAMPIONS IN ACTION Whatever their failings may* have been during the first half of the season, Canterbury’s leading athletes have begun the New Year exceptionally % welL The resumption of the interAdub competition on the St. Andrew’s College ground on Saturday afternoon marked a definite stage in the recovery of the sport from its unfortunate lapse. Not only were fields, particularly A grade fields, bigger and more representative, but there was much closer racing, times were greatly improved, and for the first time, this season spectators obtained Some glimpses of the sparkling entertainment a good athletic meeting can produce. - The presence of several Canterbury champions, all well on the way with their training, lent particular interest to the meeting. The keenness of the racing and the improvement in times

were _ obviously the outcome of some conscientious training during the holiday period, and it appears that form at the Canterbury championships, which are to be held in five weeks’ time, will be almost as good as ever. MacFarlang Improves "the runners had assistance from the north-east wind in making good times in track events, but this hardly detracted from the merit of the performances. The afternoon began With the 220 yards, the best Of which was J. B. MacFarlane’s run in 22 3-6 sec. MacFariano has improved considerably, but he has a good way to go before he can get back to the form with which he won the Canterbury titles. His opposition in his race on Saturday consisted of H. C. MCGaskey ISumner), who put in a determined run, and K. Lovell (Hangiora). The three-mile' races produced two excellent efforts. C. H. Matthews (Technical was out again and won comfortably in I4min SSsec, time which was not far outside his best for the distance. K. W. RobinSon (University) attracted Considerable attention in the same race. From the start he dropped into a useful position behind MCtthews, and carefully fol-

lowed his pace, entirely disregarding the erratic running of the rest of the field. This -policy helped Robinson a great deal, and although he was unable to keep Matthews within Striking distance he made excellent time —lsmin 43sec—a personal record ahd seven seconds inside the Canterbury standard. Thrilling Finishes These solid performances were fol-

lowed immediately by two of the best races of the day. In the first, the 220 yards hurdles, 3. D. Nelligan (Canterbury), joint-holder of the New Zealand record, and E. P, Newburgh (Canterbury) met in a rteek-and-neck, struggle. Nelligan set a hot pace from the gun, but Newburgh, who has Steadily improved OVer this distance, wept with him hurdle by hurdle, managing to dead-heat in a thrilling finish. The time was 26 l-ssec, comparing favourably With Nelligan’s New Zealand record of 25 4-ssee. The most eagerly awaited event was the first meeting of V. P. Boot, New Zealand University champion, with T. G. Broadway (Canterbury), the New Zealand champion, over the half-mile. Broadway was unlucky at the start,

He drew the outside lane and had to run right out on the first bend to get into a Useful 'position. Hoot, on the inside, also suffered interference. Headway led for a short distance, hut on ,the second lap Boot had charge, opening up a substantial lead. It looked as if Boot would hold his advantage all the way, but Broadway came up fast round the last bend and overhauled him to win by six.inches. The time was 2min, not brilliant but as good as could be expected considering the way the race was run. Other good performances included a mile walk done by F, W. Dukes (Sydenham), the Cafaterbury Champion, In 7rtiin 29 3-ssec, a hop, step, and lump of 44ft Sin, recorded by H. W. Wilkins (Technical), and a pole vault of 10ft Bin by M. V. Blake (University).

INTER-CLUB MEETING AT GERALDINE RECORD BROKEN IN WOMENS LONG JUMP IBPSCUI. to tub pnssa.i . GERALDINE, January 18. With a fine jump of 17ft 2 jin, adding an inch, to her previous official record jump at Temuka recently, Miss D. Strachan (Timaru), New Zealand titleholder for the women’s iohg jump, again unofficially broke the New Zealand record at to-day’s inter-club sports meeting at Geraldine. Ideal weather favoured the meeting, which was held under the auspices of the Geraldine Amateur Athletic Club, with the assistance of the Officials of the South , Canterbury Amateur Athletic Centre, and the attendance showed an increase on that at the previous inter-dub meeting at Geraldine. Some good flnisbes were seen in the running events, all the competitors starting* from scratch, but a tricky wind interfered -With the javelin and discus throwing.
