HURRICANE IN SAMOA
- WIND AND RAIN SLIGHTLY ABATED (Received January 19, 7.50 p.m.) APIA, January 18. The wind and rain abated slightly this morning. The Hauraki returned to port and loaded part of her cargo. She put to sea again to-night, as the weather is still uncertain. Considerable damage was done to banana and breadfruit trees, and a native child of six years was killed in the village of Salemoa, when a coconut tree smashed through the roof of a house. Roads and bridges were washed out in several places in outside districts. A message from Suva stated that Samoa reported a hurricane at Keppel Island. At 2.30 p.m. G.M.T. the barometer was at its lowest, 29.03 in, and the wind was from the east, force 12. The wireless aerial was doWn, but endeavours were being made to find out further details. HEAVY LOSS OF BANANAS (Received January 20, 12.15 a.m.) APIA, January 18. The weather is now normal. It Is estimated that there is a7O per cent, loss of bananas. The Cape York shipment of 5000 cases to Auckland in February has been cancelled. The Hauraki sailed this afternoon.
