TWO DEATHS IN ONE WEEK

Two women writers whose work* were known to the last generatioh died

during the first week in December. One of them, the’ Baroness Albert d’Ahethan, was the sister of the late Sir Rider Haggard, and, although she did not attain her brother’s lame as a novelist, her writings were considerable.

Her husband, Baron d’Anethan, who died a quarter of a century ago, was Belgian Minister at Tokyo, and they lived in Japan from 1898 to 1906. Several of the novels written by the Baroness had Japan fot a background, She also wrote a volume of poeriis and another of memoirs. She returned to
