Mrs F. E. Twyford (“Holbury,” Cashmere Hills), who has been spending the last four months in Australia visiting Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney, will arrive in Wellington by the Makura to-day on her return home. Mrs T.. H. Roskruge (Elizabeth street, Riccarton) has returned from Perth, Western Australia,' travelling via Melbourne and Bluff. Sir Archibald and Lady Edmondstone (London), who are visiting the South Island, will leave for Wellington this evening.

Mrs Derrick Gould (Fendalton), who is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs A. S. Elworthy, Holme Station, Timaru, will return to Christchurch on Friday. Mr and Mrs J. Walker and their daughter Olga (Latimer square) are spending a holiday in Timaru. Miss Doris E. Taylor (Armagh street West) will leave on March 7 by the Ruahine for England. Her sister, Mrs R. S. Southern Lakes. Miss Margery Thompson has returned from a trip to the Eglinton Valley, and is now the guest, of Mrs Russell Cordery, Papanui road. Miss Delcie Clegg and Miss Daphne Vercoe (Christchurch) are at present spending a holiday in Gisborne, where they are the guests of Mr and Mrs Basil Le Compte, Cook street. Colonel and the Lady Victoria Braithwaite are expected to arrive in Canterbury, from England next month. The Lady Victoria, who was formerly Lady Plunket, made many friends in the Dominion when her late husband, Lord Plunket, was Governor of New Zealand, and a warm welcome will await her in both islands, particularly in Canterbury, where her daughter, the Hon. Mrs Tahu Rhodes lived for some years, and took a prominent part in the life of the community, Mrs Andrew Rutherford (Mendip Hills) with her daughters, Mrs Eric Russell (Melbourne), and Miss Emily Rutherford and her grandson. Mr T. Russell, have left for a motor tour of the West Coast, Nelson, and Marlborough. Later Mrs Russell and her son will visit North Auckland. The marriage of Mr Colin Acland, second son of Sir Hugh and Lady Acland. “Chippenham,” St. Albans, and Miss Sybil Warner, of Durban, South Africa, will take place at Durban on January 31. Miss Ada Bowker (Merivale lane) and her sister, Mrs T. B. Bowker will leave New Zealand in March for a trip to Britain. - At the polo grounds at Hagley Park on Saturday, hard fought practice games were played and enjoyed alike by those. taking part hi the strenuous sport, and by a large gathering of interested spectators. RECEPTION OF WELCOME On Saturday morning, members of the Christchurch branch of the Overseas League held an enjoyable morning tea party in Beath’s private reception room, to honour and welcome to the city, Miss Agnes Stops, a member of the London Overseas League, who has paid several visits to the Dominion to further her work for the Women’s Institute and Overseas League. Miss E. Aitken introduced Miss Stops, who spoke of the various branches of the league which she had visited en route to Australia and New Zealand. Closer co-operation between the Empire leagues, especially between the Overseas and Victoria Leagues would result in benefits to both societies, she thought. In moving a vote of thanks to Miss Stops for her address, Mrs W. S. Bean pointed out that if the Overseas, Victoria, Empire Service, and Navy Leagues, co-operated in Christchurch, one advantage would be that more commodious committee rooms would be arranged for members, although each society could still retain its Individuality. An interesting visitor to Wellington this month is a Christchurchborn woman, Mrs Julia Rapke, who will be remembered amongst her old friends in the Dominion as Miss Levoi. Mrs Rapke spent many years in Wellington before she left the Dominion for Victoria, Australia, almost 31 years ago. She is a . ex-vice-president of the National Council of Women of Victoria, and recently resigned the presidency of tho Victorian Women Citizens’ Movement. She has been actively associated with Children’s Court work in Australia for seven years, and holds two separate commissions, that of a Justice of the Peace, and special magistrate of the children’s court. She is chairwoman of the bench at the court at St. Kilda, Melbourne, where she was specially appointed, and has two officers beneath her, one a man., Mrs Rapke is also vice-president Of the Children’s Kinema Council of Victoria, an organisation which aims at improving film programmes.

The popularity of the old-time dance at the Alexandra Hall was again shown on Saturday evening. Jackson’s

Stillwell, on behalf of the assembly, welcomed the visitor as the “Lassie fromLancashlre,’ and congratulated her for her pluck and endurance) and world’s cycling, record. Miss Rosslyn gave several songs, which were well received; and then joined in the old-time dances.. A vote of thanks was passed to Miss Rosslyn. ■
