TRADES HALL OFFICIALS
TO THE EDITOR Or THI PRESS. Sir, —I have just returned to Christchurch and, on perusing the copies of “The Press” which nave accumulated since I h/we been absent, I read a statement made bv the Minister for
Labour, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, that the Department of Labour “was as dead as Julius Caesar.” If this statement, as reported, is correct, I would like to ask the Minister if he would care to comment on the activities of the gentlemen who occupy the executive positions at the Trades Hall during the last four years. As a real toiler I may say I have watched closelv the so-called ’’work” of these people, especially in regard to unemployment, and in mv opinion they; are to be compared with the Sphinx of Egypt—nobody knows if they have ever moved. Apparently the Minister for Public Works recognises this, for in his statement to the men at Ashley camp he said that he would m future only recognise the New Zealand Workers’ Union. Therefore, it will not be necessary for them to organise ihe men as it will be compulsory to join the union.—Yours, etc , _ real worker. January 17, 1936.
