: United I. retained the Harman Shield on Saturday, defeating United 11. in the final round of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s senior in-ter-club competition at Wilding Park.

Neither United team had been beaten until Saturday, and as the strength of the club had been divided as evenly as possible between the two teams it was expected-that there would be a close matchi United 1., however, was definitely superior on the day although there were some - close matches, notably /in the doubles. The weather was perfect and the • courts were in excellent order. Angas in Form Angas, first man for United 1., was

in splendid form against H. A. Barnett, who, although playing an accurate and diligent defensive game, could not gain more than two games in each set. Angas’s net attack had Barnett bustled most of -the. time. Two Canterbury . representatives of former years, Robinson (United I.) and Patterson, met in a very interesting match. Both showed much of their old-time form, Robinson driving nicely on the forehand and, volleying well, while -Patterson was wonderfully consistent from the back line. It was Patterson’s steadiness that won the match after Robinson, had atoned for his numerous

LINWOOD Singles H. Dymond beat A. R. Cant, 6-1, 6-1. D. F. Glanville lost to H. S. P. Andrews, 8-10, 3-6. W. J. Deans beat N. R. Mansfield, 6-1, 6-2. B. A. Young beat E. Gant, 6-4, 6-4. Doubles Dymond and Glanville lost to Cant and Andrews, 0-6, 7-5, 3-6. Deans and Young beat Mansfield and Gant, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Cashmere won by 4 matches to 2.
