TYPHOID AMONG MAORIS
r • : SAID TO BE - ; WITHHEM):, DIFFICULTIES FOR HEALTH DEPARTMENT u . trasss isaociATio* HAWERA. January. 18. 'Suspicion has been aroused in the district that illness among the Maoris - is? being concealed from the, health authorities, and that patients are being ' secluded in their homes or removed elsewhere. The Foxton outbreak of typhoid is believed to have some connexion with «an outbreak at Otakeho, ..la miles trom Hawera, but because ot :■ stolid reticence among the Maoris, it is not known definitely whether the car- * riers have passed from the Otakeho ..settlement to Foxton, , A further case ot typtioid anions' the Maoris at Otakeho was admitted to hospital last night. This'makes the .; tenth patient since December 27. and _iour have died. The reason for this greater proportion of deaths to patients in the Ota- - keho outbreak, compared with the original epidemic in September last, when one ward at the hospital had to be set aside for treatment and observation, is attributed to suppression by Maoris.
