SURF COMPETITION AT NEW BRIGHTON CONTEST FOR OWLES CUP The annual competition for the Owles Cup, a dub five-man alarm event, was held by teams of the New Brighton Club on tpe New Brighton beach yesterday, in ideal weather. Six teams took part, providing interesting entertainment for hundreds of bathers. Points were.allotted for. both rescue and resuscitation, which were held separately, and the competition was so close that only four and a halt points divided the first and last teams. The alarm was given to each team by Mr A* W. Owles, the patron of. the club, who presented the cup. The other officials were:—Judges, Messrs N. McDowell (rescue) and C. C. Couldwell (resuscitation); timekeepers, 'Messrs L. C. Matson and W. Queree; instructor, Mr C. C. Couldwell. The Judges commented upon the smartness shown by all of the teams, and the evenness in the total points. There had been no big mistakes, but ail of the teams- seemed to be very competent, although the sea had been too calm to give a good test. . , Mr Owles congratulated the winning team, and presented the cup to the captain, A. T. F. Stokes, for his team. He said that alarm events were good training in preparation for cases, of actual drowning, and he was very pleased to see so many taking part to the competition. . THREE COMPETITIONS HELD

The North Beach Surf Club held surf life-saving competitions yesterday afternoon for the Ward, D. V. Wilson, and Shaw Cups. The sea was flat and very choppy, making it difficult for the competitors. In the D. V. Wilson Cup competition the work in the water was completed but the resuscitation section will be held later.

Judges were Messrs D. V. Wilson and V. Q. Splller and the timekeeper Mr Dalton. '

Other competitors were N. Stevens, S. Freeborn, W. Wright, and G. Bobby. , This was a junior handicap event, round tire buoy and back, the buoy being anchored 150 yards out.

Meeting of Committee

Mr D. V. Wilson presided over a meeting of the committee o£ the club held in the North Beech Hall yesterday morning. Mr Allan Dalton reported that the contractor had completed the painting and repairs 'to the club’s building. Mr Dalton was authorised to arrange for painting the roof of the building. • ■ A letter was received from the New Brighton Borough Council stating that no provision has been made for, the usual £5 grant'to the, club, and as the estimates been exceeded no grant could be made during the present year. Mr D. V. Wilson'was deputed to make further representations to secure the grant. It Was decided that the.DWton Cup be awarded to* the best all-round performance by a boy under 17 years ot age. It was decided that a surf life-saving team visit Greymouth next Sunday. Mr D. V. Wilson was appointed manager, Mr Dalton was appointed to represent the club for .the bellman .championship at the New Zealand championship contests to be held at. Dunedin. Messrs V.G; Spiller (convener), C. R. Rlordan. G. Mcllroy, S. Rich, and L. R. Moore were elected a special committee with power to. act in selecting and' entering a team for the Nelson Shield, WAIMAIRI BEACH SURF CLUB The Walmalrl Beach Surf' Club held club competitions yesterday, The judges for the round-tne-buoy races were Messrs S. W. Benson and J. G. Ironside*

and for the. resuscitation Messrs Benson and R. P. Bound. , The results were:— RACE BOUND THE BUOY Juniors—R. Tinker, time 3mln S2sec. 1:, J. Were 2. C. Hayes 3, T. Tinker 4. The sea was fairly rough. The time was good, and the winner showed good judgment. The race was keenly contested, and the finishes were very dose, only two’yards separating the first and second man. Seniors—H. F. Evans, time, Satin 25sec. 1; D. J. Norman 2. B. Buckley 3, J. H. Skinner 4. There-were 15 entries. The race was very keen, and there was only a short distance between the first four men. ■ ■ ■ Senior Resuscitation—D. Ryland 1, D. W. Benson 2, H. F. Evans 3. D. J. Fyfe 4. The judges had a difficult tasir in awarding the points. The competitors showed great skill and knowledge of their work. There was a difference of only two points between the first seven men.
