CONDEMNATION IN PARLIAMENT
“BETRAYAL OF LEAGUE” DISCUSSION NEXT WEEK IN HOUSE OF COMMONS (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPTRiaHT.) (Received December 13, 10.30 p.m.) LONDON, December 12. Opposition to Sir Samuel Hoare’s and M. Laval’s terms continues to spread. Lord Davies will move in the House of Lords on December 18 a motion analogous to that sponsored by four Conservatives and two Liberals in the House of Commons that Great Britain should not assent to terms giving more to the aggressor than could have been obtained by peaceful negotiation. Seven more members are now supporting the motion. Sir Herbert Samuel has strongly criticised the Government’s treatment of the situation. The parliamentary correspondent of “The Times” says that the House of Commons will probably discuss the peace proposals on December 19, although a decision is not to be taken until some indication has been given of the reception of the terms at Geneva. It is expected that in view of the present temper of the Opposition, the debate will be on a vote of censure which, however, will rally all the members of the Government, in spite of their own anxieties and resentment. The Liberals have tabled a motion condemning the settlement as violating Abyssinia’s territorial integrity and political and economic independence, in favour of the declared aggressor, describing such a settlement as “a betrayal of the league and an act of national dishonour.” Meanwhile, the Government’s supporters are hoping that the debate will dissipate the fog surrounding th§ Hoare-Laval conversations, as members are receiving numerous protests about them from their constituents.
