PENAL REFORM
TO THE JSDITOa 01 TH* PRESS, Sir—Miss B. E. Baughan’s letter in “Tne Press” last Saturday reminded me of some lines in Johnson’s ‘•London,” which, snghtly adapted, seem to fit our situation: A single jail in Alfred’s golden reign Coma half the INation’s criminals contain —Reformative detention then unknown! Blest Age! but ah, how different from our own! It seems probable that Johnson would have been heartily of Miss Baughan’s opinion—as indeed any honest man wno gives our penal system a minute’s consideration, must be. I hope this catches the eye of the new Minister for Justice.—Your, etc., A.H.B. December 13, 1935.
