Mr E. C. Huie arrived from Wellington by the steamer express yesterday morning. Dr. L. A. Bennett returned from Wellington by the Rangatira yesterday. Dr. H. G. Denham left last evening for Wellington. Superintendent D. J. Cummings was a passenger south by the Rangatira yesterday morning. The Hon. W. Hayward, M.L.C., returned south from Wellington on the Rangatira yesterday morning. The Lancaster Park Board decided last evening to offer its congratulations to the Hon. D. G. Sullivan on his appointment to the Cabinet as Minister for Industries and Commerce. The Town Clerk, Mr J. S. Neville, who returned on Wednesday after a long holiday abroad, will resume his duties on Tuesday morning. Mr G. A. Lewin, of Dunedin, a member of the Local Government Loans Board, came south by the Rangatira yesterday morning. Mr Justice Johnston arrived from Wellington by the steamer express yesterday morning to preside at a sitting of the Court of Review, held at Christchurch yesterday. Messrs ‘A. F. Wright, W. S. Newburgh, W. A. Flavell, and L. L. Cordery were among the passengers on the Rangatira from Wellington yesterday morning. Mr H. J. D. Mahon was granted 12 months’ leave of absence at a meeting of the council of the Auckland University College this week. Mr Mahon will leave early next year on a visit to England and the Continent. The Rev. D. M. Hercus, of Calvin Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn, has been elected moderator of the Wellington Presbytery for the coming year. Mr Hercus is almost the youngest member of the Presbytery. Mr W. R. Carey, manager of the Kaiapoi Woollen Manufacturing Company, Ltd., returned south by the Rangatira yesterday morning. Mr M. J. Gresson has received news that his son. Mr T. A. Gresson, was called to the bar in Great Britain last month. He left the United States of America by the Mariposa yesterday, and is due in Christchurch on December 29. Mr W. F. Herrick, general secretary of the United Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Association of New Zealand, who attended the conference of secretaries of the Australian commercial travellers’ associations, held in Melbourne last month, returned to Christchurch yesterday. The best wishes of the Lancaster Park Board for a good trip were offered last evening to Mr A. E. McPhail, a member of the board, who is going to Japan with the New Zealand University Rugby football team. The board granted Mr McPhail leave of absence for three months. Mr McPhail will sail from Auckland on December 23.
Mr P. A. M. Williams, who has been first assistant master at Medbury Preparatory School at for a number of years, and who has left the staff, was presented with a suitcase by Mrs E. J. Chennells, wife of the headmaster, on behalf of the boys at the annual prize-giving at the school grounds yesterday afternoon.
Mr Malcolm Leadbetter, M.A., one of the staff of St. Andrew’s College, who has been appointed rector of the Waimate High School, was honoured at a meeting of old boys of the college, presided over by Mr J. A. Hem’y. On behalf of the Old Boys’ Association, Mr K. R. Wallace (president) presented Mr Leadbetter with a set of gold cuff links. Mr George Ellwood, formerly of Christchurch, the well-known ’cellist, who recently completed a term of musical study in Italy, passed through Christchurch yesterday morning on his way to Dunedin. Mr Ellwocd is under contract to the New Zealand Broadcasting Board, and has already given recitals from the Wellington and Auckland stations. He will return to Christchurch shortly. Mr Ellwood, who has decided to make his permanent home in Australia, recently opened a ’cello school in Sydney.
