MAN'S VISION INTO SPACE EXTENDED
O LARGEST TELESCOPE MIRROR IN WORLD HUGE PIECE OF GLASS TAKES YEAR TO COOL (Received December 9, 11.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, December 9. The world's largest telescope mirror, 200 inches in diameter, was successfully removed from the annealing oven, and after inspection it was found »to be flawiess, and ready to be installed in the telescope at the Mount Wilson Observatory, California. The giant piece of glass, poured in December last year, took a year to cool. It will multiply the extent of the observers' known universe 27 times, extending vision into space to 1,200,000,000 light years, three times the distance now possible with a 100-inch telescope. It will make 1,500,000 stars visible, compared with 6000 visible with the unaided eye. The mirror will make the moon visible as if within 25 miles of the earth, and will, it is hoped, reveal the secrets of the "canals" on Mars and show if there is life on that planet.
