TRAMWAY BOARD
* IMPROVED SUNDAY SERVICES Improved Sunday tram services on the Cranford street-Lincoln road and St. Albans Park-Spreydon lines are proposed by the Christchurch Tramway Board, according to a report presented at the meeting of the board yesterday, when Mr J. K. Archer presided. Present were Messrs E. J. Howard, M.P., J. Mathison, G. Manning," W. J. Walter, E. Parlane, G. T. Thursun, and R. M. Macfarlane. The works committee reported that in future motormen only would be on the New Brighton one-man cars, except when there was a trailer. To avoid the heavy camber on the roadway at the southern entrance of the Cathedral grounds the inward New Briguton cars would in future stop one car length nearer the centre of the Square. A complaint had been received that Lincoln road (No. 7) did not stop in the Square on Show Day, the committee reported. Actually these trams did not stop in the Square between 10.39 a.m. and 1.13 p.m., because they Were overloaded before they reached the Square. Even when the loading had eased off and these cars began to stop in the Square far more people Were waiting there than could be accommodated. It was noticeable while the cars were not stopping that often enough people to fill two cars went over to the special trams after a No. < had gone through. An inspector was on each of the cars that went through without stopping, and would nave stepped them if there had been any room.
