ADVANCE IN FUNERAL FURNISHING * FIRST OF ITS KIND IN CHRISTCHURCH Owing in some measure to the development of community life, and the habit of living in flats, funeral furnishing is beginning" now to embrace every detail of the funeral. It has extended in New Zealand to the provision of fine chapels on the properties of funeral furnishers, allowing the whole ceremony of the funeral to be carried out from the one premises. In response to many requests MESSKS J. LAMB and SON have built at their premises 234 LICHFIELD STREET a chapel where services may be held and where caskets may lie in readiness for funerals. The new chapel has been inspected by several ministers and has been highly praised. This chapel is the first of its kind in Christchurch. Its size is 30ft by 19ft, with seating accommodation for 50 persons. It has ecclesiastical furnishings and is panelled to a height of 6ft 6in with beautiful figured rimu. The upper part of the walls are in white plaster. .The ceiling is beamed and also plastered. The doors and windows are fitted with leadlights, and help to create a quiet, reverent atmosphere within the building. By means of blinds it is possible to subdue the light in the ehapel. Beautiful Furnishings On the floors are thick carpets, in red, and on the altar table is a red cloth with gold hangings. There is a reading table in figured rimu, and the pews are.of the same beautiful wood. Silver stands rest in front of the altar table for the caskets. The entrance may be made from the street or from inside the premises of Messrs J. Lamb and Son. The entrance from the street is built with the same beautiful figured rimu that makes the interior so impressive. At the rear, of the chapel is a rest room, furnished with a heavy carpet and wicker chairs. This is intended! specially for the use of country peopla who may be forced to arrive early, Hitherto these people have had no quiet place in which to rest and this handsome addition to the premises will be much appreciated. All Denominations To people who live in flats a chapel such as this, where bodies may rest before the funeral, is considered essential, owing to the difficulty of holding funerals from houses where other families are living. It is also considered essential for countty people. Clients of Messrs J. Lamb and Sou may hold services in the chapel or not as they desire, but the building may always be used as a resting place for caskets before funerals. The chapel is not built for any one denomination, but will be furnished suitably for all. Its fine and appropriate furnishings, and its quiet, religious atmosphere are immediately impressive, and ttffe chapel will be welcomed as a valuable and essential addition to the fine premises and furnishings of Messrs J. Lamb and Son's establishment.
