GREYMOUTH PRESERVATION OF SCENERY {*iaCLtL 50 £SB P3JBSS-) GREYMOUTH, December 4. IMr F. A. Kitchingham presided at a meeting of the scenery preservation, committee of the Greymouth. branch, of the Automobile Association (Canterbury). Mr W. F. Hariey fsecretary) reported that the association had cam.munciated with the Lands Office about sections at Moana, which the association wishes to have incorporated in the scenic reserve, or Moana Domain, and it was decided that the committee assist in having the association s wishes put into effect. The following resolutions were passed:—That representations be made to the Commissioner of Crown _ Lanes to have proclaimed as a scenic reserve a strip of 15 chains in widtfcf along the boundaries of Reserve 131. fronting the left bank of the Arnold river; that Mr Cagney (Lands Department) and Mr Darby 'Forestry Department) be asked to join with the members of the committee in inspecting the scenic reserves, _ and prospective scenic reserves on the Three Lake route (Lake Brunner, Lake Poerua, and Lady Lake); that the committee urge cm the Minister in _ charge of scenic reserves the necessity of fencing the reserve offered by Mr Robert Johnston, on the Funakaiki road, with a view to the preservation of the bush; that the Commissioner of Crown Lands be advised that specific reports on the wholesale traffic in ferns from Lake Brunner district had been received, and that the names _ of persons involved would be given if necessary. Otira Tunnel Freight Last week 11,671 tons of freight was hauled through the Otira tunnel, from Westland to Canterbury, compared with 10.718 tons in the corresponding week last year, and 10,600 tons in 1933, Vital Statistics The vital statistics for Greymouth for November with comparisons with November last year in parenthesis were: Births 29 (21), deaths 7 ' 1), marriage notices issued 10 *9), marriages by registrar 1 (0). Herd Testing The West Coast Herd Testing Association's averages for November were; Cows tested 1830, average fat 33.80, average test 4.1, highest herd 50.46, lowest herd 23.52, highest cow 79, lowest cow 10. Ketamed Soldiers* Association At a meeting of the executive of the Greymouth branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, at which Mr A. H. McKane presided, it was decided to nominate the Rev. F. T. Read as Canterbury-Westland District vicepresident An allocation of the canteen funds for the relief of distress was made to the various sub-associa-tions. The numbers of men visited and assisted at the hospital from the tobacco fund during the last three months were: August 14, four; August 31, six; September 18, six: October 6. eight; October 20, six. The financial statement was approved, and accounts amounting to £29 17s 4d were passed for payment. Personal Mrs W. F. Karley and Mrs P. Hambleton left yesterday for Christchurch. Mr and Mrs W. Wilton left yesterday on a visit to Christchurch. Mrs J. P. Riordan left yesterday on return to Auckland. Mrs C. C. Mosley returned yesterday from Christchurch. Miss N. J. Sullivan returned yesterday from Christchurch. Miss Jean Harker returned yesterday from Christchurch. Mrs R. Trevor Smith returned yesterday from a visit to Christchurch. Mr K: E. Balchin returned yesterday from Christchurch. Miss A. Stent left yesterday for Christchurch. Mr and Mrs H. Stop forth left yesterday on return to Wellington.
