FORTY THOUSAND SIGNATURES
PETITION TO KING Forty thousand signatures have already .been obtained in New Zealand for the petition to be presented to the King asking him to take steps for the abolition of poverty. The work of gathering the signatures has been undertaken by the League to Abolish Poverty, the committee of the Canterbury branch of which met at the rooms of the Young Men's Christian Association last evening. Mr A. C. Maxwell presided over the meeting, at which it was reported that forms carrying 5600 signatures would be 'forwarded to Wellington from Canterbury immediately. It was decided to continue the effort and obtain signatures to the large number of uncompleted forms in hand, by means of a canvass of the city area. It was decided to keep the organisation alive by holding meetings every three months. The committee asks that all outstanding forms should be returned to the local headquarters within the next week -to enable the figures to tje kept up-to-date. >
