EARLY PASTORAL VISIT COMMEMORATED
SPECIAL SERVICE AT GORE BAY, CHEVIOT
To commemorate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the pastoral visit of Bishop Hobhouse, of the Nelson diocese, to Mount Parnassus, Cheviot Mills, Gore Bay, and Hawkswood, which took place on November 28, 29, and 30, 1860, a service was held in the Gore Bay Tennis Club's grounds at Gore Bay, and was attended by a congregation of about 80 parishioners. The service, which was fully choral, was conducted by the Rev. S. Carney, of St. Peter's Anglican Church, Kaikoura, who acted for the Rev. G. Widdup, of Cheviot. Mr Widdup, although present, had not completely recovered from his recent Illness. The preacher was the Right Rev. W. G. Hilliard, Bishop of Nelson, and fourth successor to Bishop Hobhouse. The bishop delivered an appropriate sermon, paying a special tribute to the good work done by Bishop Hobhouse under the trying conditions of 75 years ago, when the journey from Nelson had to be made on foot.
