CRITICISM OF SHIPPING ARRANGEMENTS
TOURIST CONSIDERED TO BE . MISTAKEN 1
A complaint was recently made at Napier by Mr G. W. Simpson, former Public ervice Commissioner in West* em Australia that-ty hen he had decided to spend six months in New Zealand he had been told that he would have to return within three months If he-wanted a return ticket and that this had caused him to decide to spend three months of his holiday in Japan. His complaint; however, was said to fee without foundation when enquiries were made yesterday among tourist agencies and shipping companies. It was stated that there were no return tickets available from Australia to New Zealand at reduced rates, and although a passenger could order his return ticket when in Australia he did not obtain any concession from the shipping companies by doing so, and there was no limit to the time within which he could avail himself of it provided it were in reason. . Mr Simpson said that it was little use for the New Zealand Government to spend large sums to advertise New Zealand as a tourist resort if those wishing to accept the invitation ha<J obstacles, placed in their' way. He had made representations to the Tourist Department, and believed that steps would be taken to have an alteration made. It -was suggested at one office that Mr Simpson might be referring to the limit of three months on New Zealand railway tickets. It was possible, how» ever, to obtain an extension of this time if necessary. At another office a further possibility was suggested, that Mr Simpson had used the inter-state steamers in Australia. Xt was 'found that the time limit for these, however, was six months. The only trip mentioned that had a limit of three months was one between New Zealand and Colombo, i calling at Sydney,
