UNEMPLOYED ORCHESTRA
TO THK KDITOB OF THK ritESS. Sir, —Permit me to congratulate the J. C. Williamson management and the Unemployment Board on the happy culmination of their efforts to resuscitate the excellent musical combinations so popular with picture theatres in pre-talkie times. The present combination playing at the Avon. Theatre leaves little t6 be desired in the way of effective and artistic treatment. It" is indeed fortunate that such organisations as ;the 3YA, Returned Soldiers' Association, Chrlstohurch Working Men's Club, Commercial Travellers' Association, Savage Club, and Christehurch Musical Society and Orchestral Society musical combinations have carried on despite the persistency with which canned music has been .forced on the public. We can now hope for an extension of these theatre orchestras and a reawakening of interest in musical culture. There will be critics, of course, but let us hope they will recognise the need for development not destruction. —Yours, etc., ' , 2, BARS.REST. I December 3, 1935,
