OLD GIRLS* REUNION
TIMARU CONVENT The annual .reunion luncheon of the Timaru Convent Old - Girls'" Association took place in the bay tea-rooms, | visitors being present from all parts of Canterbury. Although the reunion j was a complete success, - a touch -of : sadness was introduced into the proceedings in that the occasion marked the forthcoming , departure from Timaru of the nuns of the' Order of the Sacred Heart, for wbom the old girls have very deep affection. The tables at the tea-rooms were decorated with Iceland poppies, roses, and.catmint. Later the visitors proceeded to the convent, where they renewed acquaintance with the nuns, who, with their former pupils, attended Benediction in the convent chapel. Subsequently the visitors were the guests of Mrs N. D. Mangos at afternoon tea at her home in Craigie avenue, where the rooms .were decorated with lupins- and azaleas and the tables with bowls of posies in shades of gold. A~ Johnston, who lent their garden" for the. occasion, members ox the Lincoln-Tw, Tapu siffi-branch of the Flunket Society. entertained, at--a garden party, the mothers whose. children had been given, attention by the Plunket nurses. Many of their friends were also • present. , The visitors were welcomed by Mrs-J, W. Calder (president), and Matron, Gillespie, of the Lady King Karitane Hospital, gave a talk on "The Care of the Teeth from Infancy." >Afternoon tea was served on the lawn, and a treasure hunt was won by Eleanor. Scott. The opportunity was taken by the president and members to present to Miss Hampton (secretary) a handsome rug with birthday greetings. * Mrs J. W. Calder, who made the presentation, spoke of Miss Hampton's untiring work for the society as secretary during the last six. years. Mrs R. w. G. DANCE AT OXFORD Members of the No. 1 Oxford Troop, A ijquadron. of the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry, held a successful dance in the Oxford Town Hall. Not everyone may realise that HJLH. the Duchess of York is only the fourth, holder of her title in the course of five centuries. The last Duchess of York was Queen Mary. Before her came the Princess Royal of Prussia, who married the second son of George 11. and died in 1820. And before her, at still longer interval, came Anne Hyde, who married James IL while he was still Duke of York.in 1659. Prior to that there had been no Duchess of York since the child-wife of Richard, Duke of York, who was murdered in the Tower of London by Richard IXL That pathetic little girl died at the age of eight
