TURF GOSSIP
Reminders Acceptances for the Ashburton County Racing Club's summer meeting will close at 8 p.m. to-morrow. The annual race meeting of the Hororata Racing Club will be held on the Hororata racecourse on Saturday, December 14, and nominations for all events will close at the office of the Canterbury Jockey Club at 8 p.m. on Friday next. The acceptance fee for the Trial Plate and Novice Stakes has been reduced from £1 to 10s. Nomination and all other acceptance fees .■will be £l. Nominations , for the Hurunui Turf Club's annual race meeting, published in "The Press" on Saturday, will close with the secretary, Mr J. Steel, Hawarden, on December 7. Holiday Racing Sir Charles Clifford will be represented at the Auckland summer meeting by the two-year-olds, Wild Chase and Paper Slipper, and some other members of his team, including Fracas, may be taken north. The usual trip to the Manawatu and v/airarapa holiday meetings will also be undertaken with a small team, the composition of which has not yet been decided upon. In all probability F. D. Jones will also take a team to Awapuni for the Christmas meeting, and go from there either to Marton or Tauherenikau. A decision regarding the trip will not be made until after the Ashburton fixture on Saturday. IWell-earned Holiday Polydora is to be sent this week for a spell to her owner's property at Hororata, and will probably be left out until the autumn. She is at present in excellent racing condition, but it is thought that she has had a fairly strenuous period since she opened her career as a hurdler, and that a respite during the summer months will have her in good order to tackle the next jumping season. Recommissioned Final Shot, who was recommis6oned by Mrs J. Campbell a few days ago, is in robust condition following her spell on Mr B. Dalgety's property at Motukarara, and there is every reason to expect this useful filly to cam distinction once more. Mr' D. Spence has again taken up Lord Masham, who has been on holiday for some months. He is on the burly side, and will take some time to be got ready for racing. A Hurdling Aspirant Whaddon Chase, formerly trained by F. D. Jones for Mr J. A. McDougall, owner of Nightly, is now trained at Invercargill by T. E. Pankhurst, who has secured a lease of him. He is a five-year-old black gelding by Hunting Song from Marsurd, by Absurd. irom Makepiece (dam of Pompax, Pacify, and the i smart Hawera colt Nctium), by Martian from The Hague, by Stepniak. He is a sturdy customer, but his form has not so far been impressive. He may be tried at the jumping game, a class of sport at which Hunting Song's progeny have done welL Another Visit Although Lowenberg failed when taken to Auckland last month for the Guineas, Hawera reports indicate that he is to be taken to Ellerslie for the Christmas and New Year racing. Revision's New Owner Mr S. Overend, the Gippsland sportsman, who owns the brilliant hurdler Akanree, is the purchaser of the former New Zealander, Revision, who finished third in the Cup Hurdle Race, won by Akanree. Revision was formerly the property of the New Zealand sportswoman, Mrs W. A. Fuller. He will now become a stable mate of Akanree, under the care of P. K. Padfield, of Caulfield. A Smart Filly As Galilee had been working well it was anticipated that she would win at the Waikato meeting, but the best she could do was to register two thirds. She displayed her usual gameness on both occasions, and her first attempt at a mile and a quarter in the Waikato Cup was very creditable, although it indicated that she may not be relatively quite as good at that as at shorter distances. It seems doubtful whether sine will stay very well, but she is a very useful filly, and success at a middle distance may not be beyond her wnere the class is not too strong. Owned in Australia It is unusual for an Australianowned horse to be racing in New Zealand, but Pasha, who raced at the Waikato meeting, is owned by Mrs M. Gearin, of Sydney, and is trained by the hurdle jockey, W. J. Burgess, at Ellerslie. Pasha, whd is a four-year-old by Rampion from Turkish Holiday, was a smart two-year-old in Australia, but he went in the wind. He was sent over to Dr. W. C. Ring for an operation, which appears to have been successful, and also no doubt accounts for his remaining in New Zealand to do some racing. Silver Bin? "On what wo saw of Silver Ring in Sydney, it would seem little use racing him beyond a mile and a quarter; in fact, in good company even that distance is far for him," said a Sydney writer in discussing the Silverado gelding's prospects in New Zealand. That was the general opinion here also, but it was confounded by his win in the Metropolitan with a good horse's weight Silver Ring has always been a patchy horse, losing form at times for long periods, but when he does strike his top he is high-class at a mile, and apparently is developing stamina with age.
TROTTING NOTES
Reminders Nominations for two events at the Hororata Racing Club's annual, ing will close on Friday next. Acceptances for two light harness races at the Ashburton County Racing Club's summer meeting will close toi morrow, T _ . , , Acceptances for the New Brighton Trotting Club's summer meeting will close at 12 noon on December 3. The grass track at New Brighton will be open to-morrow for horsea engaged a£ the club's next meeting. Encounter's prospects One of the most consistent performers last season was Encounter, a black mare by Man o' War from Erin s Isle, trained at Methven by M. C. McTigue, and she is expected to return to her best form at an early date. She commenced last season's racing at Addington when she finished second to Grand Finale in the Lightning Handicap, of a mile and a half. She then won the Wellington Handicap, of a mile and a quarter, in 2min 49 4-ssec. finished second to Elvo in the Methven Cup in 4min 31sec, won the Waimairi Handicap at New Brighton in 4min 28 2 r ssec, was third to War Buoy and Wild Guy in the Victoria Handicap in 4min 26 3-ssec, and won the November Handicap in 4mm 28 3-ssec at Addington, was third to War Buoy and Muriel de Oro in the Dash Handicap in 2min 47 2-ssec, and won the Recovery Handicap in 2min 44 3-ssec at Forbury Park. In eight starts Encounter won four races, was second twice, and third twice, a consistent record. Her race at the recent meeting at Addington should have improved the Man o' War mare, and she should be at her best this week at the Forbury Park meeting. She is handicapped on 4min 32sec, and there are few better stayers in tha race. Todd Lonzia Before the recent meeting at Addington Todd Lonzia appeared likely to win at least one race, but two starts on the first day evidently got to the bottom of him and he failed rather dismally. For such a big trotter he is a remarkably quick beginner, and is as smart away from the barrier as the majority of the pacers. The W. F. James Cup at Forbury Park on Thursday will be his mission, for there are no unhoppled trotters* races on the programme to suit ham. D. C. Watts will again bo in the sulky and if Todd Lonzia is beaten it will not be through excessive weight in the sulky.
Change of Stables Rackateer has had plenty of changes of stables during the last 12 months, and his latest trainer is J. J. Kennerley, the grey gelding having been purchased by Mr J. E. Roche, a Westport sportsman who raced Fernbrook Lass with some success. When Rackateer showed brilliant form at the Greymouth meeting almost 12 months ago his owners, Messrs G. and L. Walshe, received "a number of offers for him. For a perod he was in G. S. Smith's stable and the Addington trainer may have been unlucky in not winning a race at New Brighton. J. J. Kennerley next took charge of the grey and then it was reported that Mr J. Wallis, cf Gore, had effected a purchase. There appeared every prospect of a claim for possession being made in the Civil Court, but eventually . the horse was transferred to Messrs O. Turpin and J. Bryce, in whose ownership he made several unsuccessful starts. Rackateer has been one of the most discussed horses raced during the last 12 months, and it is Kennerley's intention to give him a good spell. The grey pacer is not a beauty, but as he will be given a good speli he might justify the exalted opinion formed of him because of his West Coast racing. A Useful Pacer Eighteen Carat, who won the New River Handicap at the Southland Racing Club's meeting on Saturday, is a six-year-old gelding by Sungod—Pure Golct and is engaged in the Spring Handicap at Forbury Park on Thursday. He raced consistently in the hands of J. M. McConnell last season and on Saturday was well handled by J. Walsh, one of the best of the Southland reinsmen. Autogo Improves Autogo, who won the Waverley Harness Trot at the Southland meeting, is a five-year-old chestnut gelding by Adioo Guy, the sire of a good racehorse in Grand Mogul, his dam being Lady Great, by Great Audubon —Lady Elf, by Imperious. Autogo raced fairly consistently in minor events last season filling a place five times for stake money amounting to £35. On Satur--1 day he paced a mile and a half in 3min 28sec easily his best performance to date. He races in the nomination of Mr W. R. Hamilton, and was handled by the cross-country rider, F. Laiigford. Engaged at Forbury Park Canterbury trainers with horses engaged at Forbury Park include: E. J. Smith (Calm Queen. Noble Prince, and Roddy), C. S. Donald (Survivor, Plutus, and Gunmetal), H. Hewson (Discord and Sea Trail), L. A. Maidens (Golden Bingen, Loretta, Tricliff, Gunfire, Whippet, and Peter Locanda), M. Holmes (Isabel Patch), R. Townley (Ann Parish), G. McKendry (Kippagh and Llewellyn's Pride), D. Rodgers (Renegade • and Cream Harvester), A. Cox (Tyrone Lass, Midshipmaid, and Vesuvius), F. C. Dunlevey (Iraq and Chiming-Wrack), L. Davidson (Bay Flier and Recess), S. A. Edwards (Self), G. Mouritz (Vanity Fair and Bracken), O. E. Hooper (Doris Derby, Little Nelson, Willow Wave, and Bigj Author), G. S. Smith (Agile), M. C. McTigue (Encounter), C. P. Cameron | (Guy Junior), J. J. Kennerley (Fern-j brook Lass), D. Teahen (Dillon Queen), j F. Brosnahan (Battlefield), J. Young j (Lone Derby), R. B. Berry (GraceMcElwyn and Sylvia Sydney). j Record Meeting Expected j .Patrons to the trotting meeting at j Forbury Park on Thursday and Satur-1 day will find many improvements,! and the committee is to be congratu-j lated on its go-ahead methods, says the j "Otago Daily Times." The outside] patrons have been well catered for] in the way of betting facilities and equipment, the old totalisator building having been removed and a new, up-to-date brick one built in a most suitable position. There is plenty of space, and the figures on the two machines can be seen from nearly every part of the course. Temporary machines will be in use for this meeting, but two of the latest models are shortly to be installed. The licensed booth has also been remodelled and new stairways have been erected to the stand. The grounds have all been filled in and drained, adding greatly to the comfort of patrons. A new grass training track is being formed, and the inside paddock has been ploughed and levelled. The "Forbury" system of betting will be used, namely, the win machine paying two dividends (75 per cent, and 25 per cent), and the place machine paying three equal dividends of 33 1-3 per cent. each. Free tickets for ladies may be obtained from the secretary or any steward. Mr W. F. James has given a handsome solid silver cup for the owner of the winning horse in the big race, and this should create special interest in this event. Good fields are promised for all races, and everything points to a record meeting.

This is the first country centre in Westez-n Australia apart from Kalgoorlie to establish night racing. Lease Expired Mr G. J. Barton's lease of Bracken has expired, and she will race in the interests of Durbar Lodge at the Forbury Park meeting. Twenty different sires are represented, the figures being as follows:—Jack Potts 15, Frank Worthy 11, Grattan Loyal 6, Man-o*-War 5, Wrack 3, Travis Axworthy 3, Nelson Derby 2, Maxegin 2, Acron, Rey de Oro, Silk Thread, Erin's King, Great Bingeo, Jewel Pointer, Boltaire, David McElwyn, Cadiz, Guy Parrish, i Logan Fraser, and Ayrmont Chimes, .1 each.
closed on the leader three furlongs from home, the pair being three lengths clear of All Humbug. Once in the straight, Bay Duke drew away to score comfortably, and Beam beat Enwood just as easily. All Humbug was a poor fourth, and Great Shot found his weight too much for him in a last run.race. It was Bay Duke's first run in open company, and he was always going like a winner. Failed to Stay Gipsy Fair tried to win the Roslyn Trial Handicap all the way, but Red Treasure was always handy in second position, and catching the leader 100 yards from the post, he won going away. There was a gap of four lengths to the favourite, Wild Career, who had a bad passage, and did well to finish in the money. Palarino was fourth, but was never dangerous. Warm Favourite Succeeds Milford was a solid favourite for the Southland Cup, and he pulled his supporters through in brilliant style. Steeton made the early running, and was joined by Honest Maid at the end of live furlongs, the pair leading into the straight from Toreador. Grand Finale, and Amy Johnson, the rest of the field being bunched at this stage. Once in line for home, Milford' put in his claim, and never left the issue in doubt, winning easily. Honest Maid outstayed Grand Finale. Steeton was a fair fourth. A Solid Pacer Eighteen Carat. a pronounced favourite for the New River Harness Trot, was not headed over the last mile and won comfortably. Embark, Shandon Chimes. Gold Valley, and Royal Guy followed the leader into Ihe straight. Royal Guy finished the best of the others, but had no chance with the winner. College Boy fnished fast for third money, and Embark was fourth. From End to End Amelita was first out and first home in the Stewart Island Handicap. Island Linnet, Gold Fox. and McNab followed the leader to the straight, and at the distance Island Linnet appeared to have the measure of Amelita, but the latter responded to the hard riding of L. J. Ellis and drew away in the last stride or two to win by a head. Bay Biddy was third, followed by Young Sentinal, Impala, and Wall Street. An Outsider Thore was a boilover in the Tradesmen's Handicap, when Toreador, who, having his second start, won and paid nearly a third of a century on the win machine. Last Link and Hula Belle were the leaders to the straight, but both stepped, and Toreador stalled off a strong challenge by Cough, who was badly interfered with by Last Link at the top of the straight. The good thing was beaten, and Last Link just beat Hula Belle for third money with Broken Rule next.

NOTES ON THE RACING iSPECIAL TO THE fBESS.I An Easy Win Impala won the Southland Highweight Handicap practically from end to end, and gave nothing a chance in the run heme. June the Third, Gas Raid, and Tautau Maid followed the leader into the straight. Galleon challenged at the top of the straight and finished strongly to beat June the Third for, second money. The favourite, Golden Lap, was a poor fourth, followed by Tautau Maid and Sungem. It was Impala's first success for more than 12 months, and she paid double figures for a win. By Last Dart, she is a half-sister to Palantua. Autogo Shows Improvement Harold Guy was a good favourite for the Waverley Hani ss Trot, but he did not flatter his supporters at any stage. Autogo took charge right away, and was never headed. Gold Valley followed Autogo to the straight with Belle Grattan and Walter Gay close up. Belle Grattan failed to run on, and Autogo stayed on too well for Walter Gay. Master Garry appeared to get up on the rails, and just failed to catch Gold Valley. Led All The Way Bay Duke led all the way in the Flying Handicap and won very easily. Beam was always in second place. He
