OBITUARY
MR W. M. MANSELL Bandsmen in Canterbury and also in other parts of the Dominion will learn with regret of the death of Mr William Meadon Mansell, which occurred at Wanganui recently. Besides having been a performing member many years ago in the Stanmore Band, which has been rescusitated, Mr Mansell was well known as a writer on band topics and matters of interest to bandsmen. Under the penname of "Tom Tom" he contributed weekly a column of band news to the "Evening News," which was published by the Christchurch Press Company. These notes were most interesting. were eagerly looked for and widely read by bandsmen in Canterbury and in other parts of New Zealand. In addition to news of the bands of the Dominion, "Tom Tom" kept.his ready* abreast of all important developments in band work in Great Britain and

other countries, and he possessed most complete records of the various band contests in New Zealand. Many years ago Mr Mansell was secretary of the South Island Bands' Association. He spent most of his life in Christchurch and for many years was employed by the firm of Wm. Gobs, Ltd., timber merchants. About 10 or 12 years ago he went to Wanganui. where he resided till his death at the age of 80. Mr Mansell is survived by his widow and two daughters, both of whom are married. His only son. who was prominent as a runner when at Christ's College, left with the Main Body of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force and was killed in action on Gallipoli. Messrs P. D. and W. AMansell, both formerly of the Post and Telegraph Department are brothers, and a sister also resides in Christchurch.
