Already very encouraging results have been achieved, stated the secretary, Mr J. Roy Smith, on Saturdaymorning. Several firms have signed applications for membership. The importers' section of the chamber is participating actively in the campaign, and members of the council personally have approached the heads of • business firms. Mr Smith said that the reception accorded them in all cases indicated that the chamber's activity in matters of interest to the whole of the city or the province had been appreciated by business people generally. It was recognised that the chamber had dene a great service for the community in securing the sixpenny telegram rate and in obtaining such a satisfactory answer from the Railways Board in the move for a new station at Christchurch.
