NAMES NOT ON ROLL
SOME ELECTORS MAY BE INELIGIBLE NEGLECT ]N ANSWERING NOTICES ■- Although they have taken it for granted that their names are on the! roll' some electors may find next Wednesday that they are not entitled to vote because their names have been legally removed from the rolls and they have not taken the necessary steps to have them restored. It appears however, that the number in this position will probably be very few. An elector on Saturday told "The Press" that he had been resident in his electorate for many years, but on several occasions had changed his address within the electorate. He thought he had always notified the Registrar of Electors of his change of address, but on this point was not sure. On inspecting the rolls for his electorate he found that his name was not included. He therefore wanted to know if he would be allowed to vote on Wednesday, either by declaration or in the ordinary way.
! The position was referred to the L Registrar of Electors, Mr J. J. Mc['Gahey, who made it clear that any whose names had been legally t removed from the rolls and who had ?not taken steps to have them restored were not eligible to vote. He !' explained that when the purging of •the rolls was started notices were sent |to all electors, and the great majority replied, with the result that their names were kept on the rolls. Those who did not reply to the first notice were sent a registered notice. The names of those who did not reply or who could not be found by the Post Office were removed from the rolls. Mr McGahey explained that electors whose nanies were removed at that stage were not then debarred from voting, but had- the. opportunity of being reinstated until as late as November 17. He thought that very few, indeed, would find that they were now ineligible because of the wide publicity given to the purging of the rolls, the very careful checking carried out in the registrar's office, and because of the efforts of candidates' committees to make sure that every qualified person was on the roll.
