COURTENAY SHOW
GOOD LIGHT HORSE DISPLAY QUALITY FAT LAMES The annual show of the Courtenay Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held at Kirwee on Saturday. The association was established 45 years ago. so is now Siting on in years. The district is the fntre of a prominent circle of stud sheep breeders and is noted for its lamb fatteSng Qualities, and this, combined with of extensive horse breeding. Inables successful shows to be held enSet from the stock within the district. there was an excellent dis- °£,- Particularly of light horses and fat play, P 8 "^"" entries for the whole la h ?w'tota?led about 150 more than last 5, h ear compemion generaUy was improved. Jtl morning did not break very promis7^v b?t the clouds cleared before it SSFte? advanced, and bright sunshine prevailed thereafter. Good Fat LamDs The heavy rains, which have retarded ♦J fattening of -lambs in most districts had a different effect in the Kirwee ViSrlrt The feed has been much drier 3££ elsewhere and as a result the disSay of tot lambs on Saturday was probEbS the best at any show so far this L. H. Adams scored heavily in fnfs section, and also in that for fat Seep. Entries were small to the section for purebred sheep. English Leicesters and Southdowns were the only two breeds to attract more than one or two entries James Reld was the most successful exhibitor in the Leicesters. The keenest competition was in the SouthS to which A. W. Adams took the two ram championships, L. D. Adams the ewe and W. J. Jenkins the ewe reserve. 'A new breeder in the Ryeland sectionRobert Reid-scored the bulk of the premier awards in that breed. Except in the dairy cattle class entries at Kirwee are generally on the small side In the classes for cows. The breed sections were represented by a few good sorts but competition , was practically non-existent. Dairying is a minor activity In the district. The Horses The horse sections, both heavy and light, ■re always sure to provide good displays at Kirwee. and Saturday's was no exception tothe rule. In the draughts M. E Jenkins took most of the senior awards and the two stallion championships, the ribbon with Ochtertyre Warrior. The ribbon for mares also went to Mr Jenkins with Greenlea's Choice and the reSro to E. J. Chatterton. The best-filled classes in the section were in the two and one-year fillies, of which there were some promising sorts paraded. There waTa P rather regrettable shrinkage of working teams on Saturday. This section to the past has been one of the main attractions of the section, and it is hoped that Saturday's occurrence is only JemP °Much the strongest sections in the show, both in numbers and quality, were the hackneys and saddle ponies. Rings of from five to eight were general in the hackney classes, and quite a number of promising young horses were included. The championship went to Miss a. a. and W. R. Lemon's Elfin. Several rings of 10 paraded in the saddle pony class, and there were very few ponies in the section that could not have been shown at the metropolitan displays. The awards were well distributed, the championship being taken by P. C. Wilson's Trixie. There was a good exhibition of harness ponies, although competition was not so Btrong ■as in the saddle section. The well-performed Humbug, shown by F. W. and B. E. Jarman, took the champion ribbon. The three sections in the hunter classes provided a creditable display. The special "for best jumper on the ground was won by Miss M. Templeman's veteran Hotch, who gave an excellent exhibition. Grain and seeds were of high quality, although competition in most of the sections was meagre. The farni produce section at Kirwee is always particularly attractive, and the standard was well kept up on Saturday. The following is the prize list, the figures within parenthesis indicating the number of competitors in the classes:—
