ATHLETICS
INTERCLUB RAGING . CONTINUED PERFORMANCES SLIGHTLY IMPROVED SMALL FIELDS AND LACK OF COMPETITION A slight improvement in performances was noticeable at the second in-ter-club meeting conducted by the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Centre at Lancaster Park on Saturday. Fields were again small and competition in many events was lacking, but there were a few efforts that showed promise. The poor entries again spoiled the meeting for the spectators. Frequently a cartridge would be wasted sending one man away to race by himself, and on one occasion nearly 19 minutes.were spent watching two C grade runners trot round the track for three miles.
The meeting was interesting to enthusiasts because of the appearance of several of the leading athletes. T. G. Broadway, the middle distance champion, had an easy run over 220 yards, and C. H. Matthews, the three-miler, ran several laps in an A grade threo mile race. A. D. Benham, the University hurdler, gave 6ne of the best performances of the day, running the 220 yards hurdles in 26 4-ssec, by himself. G. M. Tiff en, former - holder of all the Canterbury jump titles, was in form again, and scored a large shara of the University Club's points. He won the hammer throw at 108 ft sin
and the hop, step, and jump at 41ft liin, and was first in the B grade 220 yards hurdles, as well as second in the B grade discus throw and first in a C grade pole vault, scoring in all 23 points. It is unlucky for the University Club that Tiffen will shortly return to the North Island. H. H. Wilkins (Technical) and M. V. Blake (University) were two other field men in form. Wilkins cleared 43ft 4in in the hop, step, and jump, and Blake 10ft 3in in the pole vault. None of the track events but Benham's hurdles race produced anything of great interest. There was a tussle between R. Downie and C. S. Barrell, both of Sydenham, over 220 yards, Downie finishing a foot in front in 23 4»ssec. There was some interesting racing in the D grade, for boys under 18 years. The fields consisted mainly of secondary school champions, and competition was fairly keen. J. L. Wood, of Technical, won the 880 yards in 2min 7 3-ssec, the fastest time for this event during the day, and W. Christiansen, also of Technical, cleared 36ft lljin in the hon, step, and jump. H. Cave (Canterbury) threw a light discus 102 ft 4in. These performances suggest that there is plenty of good material coming forward, but it is questionable whether D grade performers running like this every week are not putting themselves in danger. INTER-CLUB MEETING AT GERALDINE WOMAN'S FINE PERFORMANCE IN LONG JUMP (SI'XCIAI. TO THB PBXSS.J GERALDINE, November 23. The first inter-club athletio meeting organised by the newly-formed Geraldine Amateur Athletio Olub in conjunction with the South Canterbury Sub-Centre, was held at Geraldine to-day in glorious weather. Owing to the recent rains the track was heavy, but soma good running was seen. The public support was disappointing. The outstanding event of the afternoon was Miss D. Struchan'B spectacular jump of 16ft sin from scratch in the women's long jump event. It was stated that _ the Timaru girl's performance had unofficially broken the New Zealand record, and that she would endeavour to break the record officially at the Temuka sports shortly. However, as no records ware available on the ground, the statement that the record had been broken could not be confirmed. Messrs G. W. Cameron, president, E. D. Moßae, vice-president of the Timar'u SubCentre, and A. M. Fyfe, president of the Geraldine Club, acted as supervisors. Other officials were:—Starters, Messrs A. J. Burniester and h. Coulter; judges, Messrs *A. Jackson (Timaru), Jock Macdonald, V. King (Timaru), E. Turner (Timaru), and •T. Ritchie (Temuka.); timekeeper, Mr John Mcllroy; recorder, Mr A.
