SATURDAY (Before Mr E. C. Lewey, S.M.) THEFT FROM COUNCEU Frederick Sharpe, aged 40 (Dr. A. L. Haulam), pleaded guilty to the theft of £43 10s 8d from the Walmairl County Council. Chief.Detective W. H, Dunlop said that the accused had bean employed by the Waimairi County Council as a meter reader. A part of his duties was the collection of accounts, and it was found In July that he had com' mitted thefts. He frankly admitted hi» guilt and made restitution of the whole amount Before this he had an excellent reputation. Dr. Haslam said that Sharpe had begun repayment of the money before he was detected. The thefts were due more to laxity and foolishness than to any criminal intent, Sharpe was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months. For behaving in a disorderly manner in Wilson's road, a boy aged 15 was placed under the supervision of the Child Welfare Officer for 12 months. Similar punishment was administered to a boy aged 14, who pleaded guilty to the theft of 7s in money.
A boy aged 15, who rode a bicycle on a footpath, was fined 2s, and another boy, for a similar offence, was fined 2s 6d. For riding at night without lights, two boys aged 16 were each fined 2s 6d. a boy aged 15, 2s 6d, and another aged 15, Is Bd. A girl aged 15 and another aged 16 were each convicted and discharged. For riding a motor-cycle at night without a rear light, a boy aged 17 was convicted and discharged. Two boys who pleaded guilty to the theft of lead valued at Is from an unfinished house were admonished and discharged. Two boys" charged with stealing 4s fld and 3s, respectively, were placed under the supervision of the Child Welfare Officer for 12 months. It w«s stated that one had found a key admitting him to a timber factory, and the money had been taken from the till.
Two brothers pleaded guilty to the theft of 6s 3d. Jt was stated that they had taken the money from a billy left for a milkman, and stated at home that it was the proceeds of an outing on Guy Fawkes' Day. Both were placed under the supervision of the Child Welfare Officer for 12 months The theft of wheels, an axle, and a shaft from a public park was admitted by two brothers. One was placed under the supervision of the Child Welfare' Officer for 12 months, and the other was admonished and discharged.
A boy aged 10 pleaded guilty to a charge of committing mischief. It was Stated that he had been caught cutting the sine from a meat safe in an attempt to obtain some food, although he was not in need. He was already under the supervision .of the Child Welfare Officer, and the period of supervision was extended lor 12 months.
