GREYMOUTH HOSPITAL BOARD MEETS (special to the press.) GREYMOUTH, November 14. Mr R. McTaggart presided at the monthly meeting of the Grey Hospital Board. Mr S. Saltzman, of Dunedin, forwarded his cheque for £IOOO for erecting an up-to-date tuberculosis block at the hospital. He said that should the block and equipment cost more, he would be pleased to forward the additional amount required. It was decided to make application to the Government for a subsidy on the gift, and that a letter of thanks be forwarded to Mr Saltzman, inviting him to attend the opening ceremony. The secretary' (Mr J. E. A. McKeefry) said that a gift had been made by a Greymouth resident. He sent his account, which amounted to £l3 4s, and forwarded a cheque for £2O. The following recommendation of the hospital committee was adopted:—That the storage of food be considered by a committee, consisting ot the chairman of the board, chairman of the hospital committee, house manager, and secretary, to bring down a report for a special meeting to be held on Monday, November 25.

The following recommendations of the finance committee were adopted:— That, because of the small difference in the premiums quoted, cover for the board's liability for negligence be taken out for an amount of £2500 in any one case and £IO,OOO in any one year; that tenders be called immediately for a 30 h.p. boiler, as specified by the Health Department, and that at the special meeting on November 25, the engineer of the Power Board and the manager of the Borough Gas Company be invited to attend; that the Ngahere District Medical Association be informed that when the association is registered the board is prepared to accept it for a medical agreement under the same terms as the lodges. It was decided that arrangements be made to overhaul the laundry machinery as soon as possible, and that the offer of the Mount Magdala Laundry, Christchurch. for the carrying out of the work in the meantime be accepted. A recommendation from the hospital committee, that Dr. T. Maunsell, house surgeon at the Wellington Hospital, be appointed to the position of resident house surgeon at the Grey Hospital, 'rom January next, at a salary of £2OO per annum, the minimum duration of employment to be 12 months, was approved. Grey Main School At the monthly meeting of the Grey Main School Committee, Mr R. A. Barrowman presided over an attendance of six members. The Canterbury Education Board advised that it had had no option but! to appoint a teacher recently added to the staff. It was decided that the committee write to the department, through the board, asking if the committee had any standing at all in the appointment of teachers, and failing a satisfactory reply, that the committee keep the infant department closed after the term holidays. Messrs A. J. Fairmaid, Herring, and Williams were appointed to report on the best method cf improving the grounds at the Blaketown School. It was decided that the chairman and secretary (Mr W. Scott) should consult with the headmaster about the practicability of holding a breaking-up ceremony, to include the Blaketown School. The chairman and secretary were appointed as the visiting committee for the ensuing month. The (Mr J. Graham) reorrted tint the mil number for October at the Miin School was 303 boys and 2-13 girls, and th~ average attendance 503.9 for the school. At Blaketown the roll number was 54 boys and 5=5 girls, and the average attendance 97.5. The agricultural insnector had visited the school and had reported very favourably on the work. Cricket Matches The following cricket fixtures have been arranged for the week-end: —Saturday: United A v. United B, at Recreation Ground No. 1; Marist v. Cob-d-n, at Cobden. Sunday: Cobden A v. Ccbden B, at Cobden; Kumara v. Marist, at Kumara; United v. Runanga, at Recreation Ground. Ten Mile Slip As there is a danger of the loose material above the road at the scene of the recent big landslide coming away at any time, the Grey County Council proposes to sluice it away. Aero Club Finances For discussing ways of raising finances to enable the Grey and West Coast United Aero Clubs to carry out the functions for which they were formed, a public meeting, presided over by the Mayor (Mr W. Meldrum), was held in the Borough Council Chambers. There was an attendance of more than 30 club members and citizens, including four women. Mr A. J. McDowall and Mr F. A. Kitchingham, presidents of the United and Grey Clubs respectively, explained the reasons for the need of funds, the United Club to carry out the training cf pupils, and the Grey Club to provide a hangar and other club facilities at the Greymouth aerodrome, which was now being constructed. It was aimed to raise between £SOO and £6OO in Greymouth, which would be apportioned between the two clubs, at the discretion of a combined committee. A full discussion ensued, and the following general committee was elected:—Messrs W. Meldrum, J. B. Paton. J. W. Greenslade, K. E. Balchin, G. Walters, F. A. Kitchingham, E. Good, A. J. McDowall, W. E. Norton, E. J. C. Hay, E. Langbein, and L. J. Wicks (secretary of the Grey Club), and Mesdames F. A. Kitchingham, J. Lindbom. F. W. Shallcrass, W. Meldrum, and A. J. McDowall. It was decided that an endeavour be made to raise as much as possible by direct contributions, and for this canvassers were appointed to canvass

business people and other residents, beginning to-day. Mr M. E. Spiers, station director of 3ZR, offered to make a session available to the club for talks on its activities. The younger members of the club decided to form a committee to endeavour to raise funds. Valedictory Members of the Runanga Drama Circle met at the home of Mrs C. Sweeney to say farewell to Mrs Unwin, who is leaving the district. Mrs Braithwaite, for the circle members, presented the guest with a rose bowl and wished Mr and Mrs Unwin health and happiness in the future. Mrs Unwin responded. Items were given by Mesdames Winstanley, Braithwaite, Kennedy, Sweeney, Baker, Smith, Unwin, and Galbraith. HOKITIKA CRICKET SUB-ASSOCIATION (special to the press.) HOKITIKA, November 13. The annual meeting of the Southern (Hokitika) Cricket Sub-Association was held last evening, with Mr F. McCabe in the chair. The following officers were elected for the season:—President, Mr F. McCabe; vice-president, Mr C. L. Harper; secretary and treasurer, Mr W. J. Howat; executive, club delegates, Messrs C. Fleming, A. Thomas, S. Ogilvie. D. J. Spence, and officers. Nominations for the senior competition were received from Hokitika Club (two); Ross (two), Woodstock, Kanieri, Rimu. and Ruatapu. A nomination fe* of 10s a club was decided upon. Hours of play were fixed as for last year, and it was decided that 'teams starting late should be required by the other sid" to nlay extra time, the matter to be decided before the start of play. The following fixtures were set down for next week-end: —Woodstock v. Ruatapu, at Woodstock; Ross A v. Rimu. at Ross; Hokitika A v. Kanieri, at Kanieri; Hokitika B v. Ross B, at Hokitika. I Social Evening A further community sing and dance in aid of the Hokitika Tennis Club's funds was held last evening at the All Saints' Hall. Mr Menzies was song leader and Mr Lawn played the piano. Items were given by Miss B. Evans (recitation). David Christianson (cornet solos). Miss E. Martini (tap dances), and McWhirter, Rid•nid. Stevenson, Hall, Wells, and Parkhill (ballet). Election Campaign Mr R H Young, the Government candidate for Westland, addressed a iprge gathering of electors in the 'own Ha'l last evening. Th~ Mayor (Mr G. A presided, and introduced the candidate, wh-> w-s making his first appearance in Hokitika. After answering a number of questions, the candidate was accorded a vote of thanKs. Obituary The death occurred yesterday of Mrs Julia Frances Daly,, of Weld street. Mrs Daly was a naive of Cattoquin, County Waterford, Ireland, and was 76 years of age. She leaves three daughters. Sister Mary Declan, Convent of Mercy, Newton, Sydney; Sister Mary Frances Convent of Mercy, Lytton. and Miss M. Daly Hokitika: and four sons. Messrs Michael Daly Greymouth; Peter Daly. Wellington, and Thomas and Richard Daly, Hokitika. Personal Mr and Mrs M. F. Robilliard left Hokitika yesterday morning for Christchurch, where Mr Robilliard has beer transferred after five years or, thestat of the Hokitika branch of the mnK of New South Wales. Mr W Chetwvnd. who has been transferred to tlu» Lands in Wellington, was farewelled by members of the Hokitika Amateur Dramatic Club, of which he was secretary and presented with a wallet as a memento from the members. Proficiency Examinations The proficiency examinations for schools in and round Hokitika are being conducted at present by the Cantorbury Education Board's inspectors, Messrs J. Wyn Irwin and Lake. REEFTON PERSONAL (SPECIAL TO THE PRESS.) REEFTON, November 13. Mr E W. Spencer has returned from a short visit to Christchurch. Mr T. H. Lee has returned from a visit to Christchurch. Women's Temperance Union At the monthly meeting of the Reefton branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, Miss C. M. McLay, Dominion youth organiser, gave an address on the world-wide work of the union. Miss McLay gave a brief outline of her recent tour abroad and ol the World Convention held last year in Stockholm, Sweden. Miss McLay commended the work of the Reefton branch. Public Works The Public Works Department is pushing ahead with the road construction of the Reefton-Maruia road. About 13 men are engaged on the deviation at Crushington, and good progress is being made. The number of men at the Maruia end of the Lewis Pass road is now 10, and more are being sent as accommodation becomes available. It is expected to place about 50 men on this job soon. Mr D. McMillan is in charge of operations at the Lewis Pass. Motueka Election Mr K. J. Holyoake, the Government candidate for the Motueka electorate, addressed about 200 electors in the Criterion Theatre and received a good hearing in spite of some good-humoured interjections. Mr F. W. Archer, chairman of the Inangahua County Council, presided. Mr Holyoake thanked all for the welcome given him, and said that this was the first political address given by him in Reefton since he was elected to Parliament three years ago. He received a vote of thanks. Before the Reefton meeting Mr Holyoake addressed electors at Black's Point and received a vote of thanks.

Mr R. J. L. York, the Labour candidate, will again visit Reefton and give an address in the Criterion Theatre on Friday, November 22. Swimming Club Mr C. Coxall presided at the annual meeting of the Reefton Amateur Swimming Club. The report and balancesheet showed a credit balance of £2 10s 4d. The election of officers resulted: — Patron, Mr K. J. Holyoake; president, Mr C. Coxall; vice-presidents, the Rev. Father Heavey, Messrs A. Wells, T. Dellaca, F. Archer, E. Nicolson, F. S. Hayes, and C. J. Lawn; coach, Mr J. Crossman, treasurer, Mr W. L. Brett; secretary, Mr J. Dellaca; club captain, Mr G. August; committee, Messrs J. Crossman, W. August, W. Lockington, E. Black, D. Robbins, C. Hughes. It was decided to ascertain the charges made by the Greymouth and Westport Clubs, as the charges of the Reefton Club were insufficient to enible the club to carry on. The appointment of a caretaker and 'he fixing of an opening day were left to the committee.
