Miss Nicholls entered the semifinals of the women's singles, in which she will meet Mis? Joan Hartigan, with a meritorious win over Miss Allison Hattersley, one of the best volleyers in the state. The New Zcalander was behind 2-4 in the deciding set, but at this stage she concentrated on deep, sliced shots to Miss Hattersley's backhand. Miss Nicholls played entirely from the baseline, and only her steadiness carried her through, as Miss Hattersley scored many points with volleys and smashes. Their inability to hit winners at the net caused the New Zealanders' defeat in the women's doubles. Mrs Betts and Miss Menzies stormed' the net at every opportunity. Henderson and Mrs Harper, a former Australian women's singles champion, "were too solid for Huxley and Miss I. Poole, especially as Huxley was below his best form. After a battle which lasted more than three hours, McGrath forfeited to Hopman because he was unwell. THE DAVIS CUP DATES OF EUROPEAN ZONE MATCHES (united rnEsa association - corvKioin.)
