—+ — RANGIORA DAIRY CATTLE AWARDS The awards for two special classes in the dairy cattle section of the Northern (Rangiora) Agricultural and Pastoral Association's show have been received by the secretary (Mr W. C. Prosser) from the judge (Mr J. Stafford). The class for the best unregistered pair of dairy cows on butter-fat and dairy records was won by Mr R. P. Robinson, and that for the best first-grade cows, judged on type and production, went to J. J. Hughey. Rowse), members of the Rangiora Borough Council, and the town clerk (Mr J. M. Fraser), in making arrangements for the laying of the foundation stone of the new post office was conveyed in a letter from the Director-General (Mr G. McNamara) received by the Mayor yesterday. Mr McNamara said that from the department's point of view the ceremony was entirely successful, and he appreciated that this was due in no small degree to the assistance given by the Mayor and his officers. Dr. E. S. McPhail, who has been in St George's Private Hospital, Christchurch, where he underwent an operation, has resumed practice. Bible Class Member Honoured Members of the Rangiora Methodist Bible classes met at the home of Mr and Mrs C. S. Ayers, "Montilla," recently to bid farewell to Mr Roy Ayers who has been living in Rangiora for the last five years and is now returning to his home at Lyndhurst. A .pleasant evening was spent in games and competitions, items being given by Misses Thelma Ayers, Joy Dennis, and Margaret Stanton. Mr C. R. Thwaites spoke of the help that Mr Roy Ayers had been to the class, and for the members asked him to accept a suitcase, with best wishes for his success in the future. Mrs Ayers also thanked him for his loyalty and support as a member of the League of Young Methodists. Mr Ayers replied. Manual Training Centre The control of the primary school manual training centre at Rangiora will be taken over by the Rangiora Primary School Committee from January 1, through a decision made at a meeting of the school committee last evening. The Canterbury Education Board, which requested that the school take over the centre, advised that £lO a year would be available for incidentals and this was accepted by the committee. Money for Christmas Cheer The sum of £lO was handed over to the Rangiora Returned Soldiers' Association by the Women's Auxiliary of the association at a social last evening to provide Christmas cheer for necessitous families of returned soldiers. The evening, organised by the auxiliary, was sj>ent in games and competitions. Borough School Committee The committee of the Rangiora District Primary School met last evening with the chairman, Mr C. J. Smith presiding. The Canterbury Education Board advised that the maintenance of the school grounds was the responsibility of the committee. The Ashley branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute forwarded £1 for the use of the school for meetings, asking that the money be spent in buying sports equipment for the school. The No. 1 account showed a credit of £ls 7s 2d, and the No. 2 account a credit of £32 14s 3d. The headmaster, Mr C. D. Gilling, reported that the roll had been affected by wet weather, there being 50 absent that day. The roll number was 366 and the average attendance 344.8. Dental clinic fees amounting to £l9 had been collected. The first part of the proficiency examination was held on October 31, and the remaining subjects would be taken on December 11. The annual examination, conducted by the head teacher for classification and promotion would begin soon.

HORNBY Members of the various lodges in Hornby gathered in the Orange Hall recently to hold a combined social ana dance. Fred Smith's band played the music and Mr Arch. Still, juri., was master of ceremonies. Among those present were Mesdames N. Eandall (Hokitika), W. Eaton, and W. Butt, Misses G. Robsrts, P. Harman, H. Alison, E. Tolerton, M. Still, N. Eaton, D. Timms, T. Parker, Aileen Falconer, B. Begg, Winnie Burt, M. Campbell, T. Green, E. Campbell (Yaldhurest), J. Shaw (Dunedin), E. Smith, H. Kempthorne, Molly Armon, R. Jellie, M. Curtis, T. Sieramanski, K. Tolerton, J. Henderson, and B. Roberts. Swimming Club At the fortnightly meeting of the Hornby Amateur Swimming Club those present were: Mr H. D. Moran (in the chair), Miss M. Mackie, Miss A. J. Thomson, and Messrs W. Moore, R. Leonard, F. O'Flynn, P. Baker, R. Garrett, C. Moran. and R. Fahey (honorary secretary). The following women were elected as a social committee for the year:— Misses O. Purchas, G. Rowlands, P. Moore, M. Still, D. Meale, A. J. Thomson, M. Maekie, and M. Lewis. The official opening of the baths will take place on November 23, swhen a club carnival will be held. A programme submitted was approved and entries will close on November 20. It was decided to enter one women's team and two men's teams in the grade swimming competitions. It was decided that during the school holidays the hours from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays be reserved for women only, and that the hours for primary school children finish at 7 o'clock each evening. HALSWELL The Halswell Basketball Club held its usual card party and dance recently* Competitions at cards were won by Mrs McGetric and Mrs F. Sparkes, Mr H. Cox and Mr Smart. In the dance hall a Monte Carlo Boston was won by Miss Savage and Mr Walker. The Misses I. and E. Streeter were the winners of a Monte Carlo one-step. The lucky-spot competition was won by Miss E. Griebel and Mr R. Thain. Music for the dance was played by Colin Smart's orchestra, with extras by Mr Brynch. Messrs H. Hayes, H. Kolkman, and F. R. Wilhelm were masters of ceremonies.

SPRINGBANK In honour of the approaching marriage of Miss Gertie Kennedy to Mr Laurie Quinn, Mrs James Miles entertained a large number of friends in the Springbank schoolroom recently. For all present, Mr C. Rands asked iMiss Kennedy and Mr Quinn to accept some presents with best wishes. A presentation of a bouquet and buttonhole was made by Ailsa Williams and Winnie Miles. Mr Quinn replied for Miss Kennedy. An interesting competition was won by Mr E. Catherwood. Songs were sung by Mrs J. Miles, Mrs W. MacDonald, Misses M. and W. Miles, Mr Alan Miles, Mr Ducat, and a humorous recitation was given by Mr Ron Watson. A piano solo was played by Mr W. Mac Donald. Dancing was held to music by Mrs Mac Donald and Mr H. Miles, extras being played by Miss M. Miles and Mr J. Matthews. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss M. Miles and Mr A. Smith, and a lucky spot by Mr and Mrs Williams. Mr G. B. Williams was master of ceremonies. LADBROOKS The Ladbrooks School will be closed to-day and to-morrow to enable the pupils to attend the metropolitan show at Christchurch. Personal Mrs John Aschen (Ashburton Forks) is visiting Mr and Mrs.Aschen ("Newlands"). Women's Institute The monthly meeting of the Ladbrooks Women's Institute was hold in the hall on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs R. J. Ware presided. One new member and visitors were welcomed by the president. Demonstrations of tatting were given by Mrs E. Milne and Mrs Aschen and an address on the treatment of wounds was given by Mrs Ware. An interesting letter from the Prince George Women's Institute, British Columbia, was received. In the competition for a Christmas gift, Mrs E. Milne was awarded first place and Mrs H. Meyer second. For the shoulder spray of flowers Mrs H. Meyer was first, Mrs R. J. Ware second. The December meeting will take the form of a children's party, when the pupils from the school will be the guests. The hostesses for the afternoon tea were Mrs H. Pickering, Miss Lorna Pickering, and Mrs P. Pickering.

WEST MELTON The popularity of the socia' evenings held in the West Melton School was again demonstrated by the large attendance at the last social. Competitions resulted as follows: —Women: Mrs C. Brown 1, Miss Ethel Prouting 2. Men: Mr Bruce Calcler (Hnlkett) 1, Mr Ron. Archie (Christchurch) 2. Consolation prizes were awarded to Miss Dorothy Pavclka (Christchurch) and Mr Cecil Dawson. After supper dancing was held to music played by Mrs W. Hayes, with extras by Mr C. W. Walker. Prizes for the first couple on the floor dance were awarded to Miss Ethel Prouting and Mr S. Walker. Mr R. Mugford was master of ceremonies. Political Addresses Mr A. A- McLachlan (Liberal candidate for the Kaiapoi seat) addressed a meeting in the West Melton School recently. Mr A. E. Langdale-Hunt presided over a good attendance, and at the conclusion of the address a vote of thanks was carried. Mr Morgan Williams ("Labour candidate), and Mr R. W. Hawke, M.P., Government candidate, also addressed well-attended meetings in the school. Mr R. Finlay presided at each meeting. At the conclusion of tnc addresses votes of thanks were passed. School Committee A meeting of the West Melton School Committee was held in the schoolroom. Mr R. Northcrolt was in the chair, and «ie following members were present: Messrs R. Finlay (secretary), R. Boag, H. E. Cross, and S. Walker. The teacher, Mrs K. M. Stewart, reported that the number on the roll was 35, five new pupils having been admitted. The attendance had been satisfactory. The reports from the inspector, Mr C. A. Clark, and the agricultural instructor (Mr Johnston) were considered very satisfactory. The proficiency examination for the standard VI. pupils will be held at Kirwee on December 13. The annual school picnic and presentation of prizes will be held at the Ashburton Domain.

SHEFFIELD The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Malvern Lodge No. 2647 was held in the Oddfellows' Hall at Sheffield. The noble grand, Bro. J. McLay, presided over a good attendance of members. Two members were initiated into the order and the conductors for the ceremony were Bro. C. J. Henderson, P.G., and Bro. C. M. King. One proposal for membership was received. The lecture master, Bro. C. Glassey, gave an address to the newlyinitiated brothers, and proposed the fifth sentiment. Motions of sympathy were passed with Bro. C. M. King and Bro. C. J. Henderson in their recent bereavements. The vice-grand, Bro. C. Fraser, reported for those who attended the presentation meeting of the efficiency competition, when the Malvern lodge was presented with the Gow Cup lor the most improved lodge. A committee was elected to make arrangements for the Christmas meeting, also the Christmas tree for the children. It was decided to have a photograph taken of the officers and members who were present when the lodge was judged for the efficiency competition. A degree lecture was given by the lecture master, nine members taking their degrees. Nominations for officers were taken, as follows:—N.G. Bro. G. Fraser. N.G. Bro. C. M. King, E.S. Sisters M. Payne and K. Newman and Bros. A. McKay, B. Robinson, R. Pre.'-.cott, and G. Innes, L.M., Bro. A. T. Wilson and Bro. F. Carr. Sick pay for £ls, doctors' accounts for £ll, and other accounts for £l7 3s 5d were passed for payment. The secretary said that the next meeting would be quarter night. HALKETT The final social conducted by the Halkett School Committee was held recently, when there was a record attendance. Competitions were won by Mrs R. Henderson and Miss A. Thompson and Messrs C. S. McKay and W. F. Turner. The aggregate prizes for the j season were won by Miss M. Wilson rnd Mr J. Thompson. The music for the dance was played by Mesdames W. Hayes and R. Henderson and Miss L. L. Thompson. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Mrs C. S. McKay and Mr T. Wilson, the prizes being given by Mrs R. J. Watson. The chairman of the school committee, Mr R. Henderson, thanked all those who had supported their socials throughout the winter and those who had given prizes. MASON'S FLAT An enjoyable dance was held in the Mason's Flat Hall, and guests spent a pleasant time dancing to music played by Mrs S. Ginders. Extras were played by Mr B. Dalzell, and a Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss A. Mason and Mr E. Maxey.
