O Mr J. R. Plampton will leave to-day on a business trip to the Chatham Islands. Mr Justice Northcroft was a passenger for Wellington by the steamer express last night. Mr E. Boulton left last evening on his way to Sydney on a short visit. Mr K. W. Hounslow, of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, was a passenger to Wellington in the Monowai from Australia. Dr. R. Noble-Adams, of Blenheim, who has been on a world tour, returned to New Zealand by the Marama. Dr, A. G. Ruttcr, house surgeon at the Napier Hospital, has resigned from that position, and accepted an appointment on the Wellington Public Hospital staff. Dr. E. H. M. Luke, of Wellington, returned to Wellington by the Monowai from Australia after spending eight months in Great Britain and on the Continent. Mr T. W. Mitchell, of New South Wales, a well-known ski-runner, arrived at Bluff from Melbourne by the Marama. Mr Mitchell expects to spend some considerable time in the Dominion. Mr W. S. Meads, of the literary staff of Hawke's Bay Newspapers. Ltd., has resigned his position on account of his departure for Australia, where he proposes to seek fresh fields in the world of journalism. Mr F. Sands, managing director of Hill, Norman, and Beard (Aust.), Proprietary, Ltd., arrived in Christchurch from Melbourne yesterday in the course of a tour of the Dominion. Mr Sands will spend a week in Christchurch. Bishop Cherrington intends to sail by the lonic on February 6 for England to raise funds for the extinction of the debts of several parishes in the Waikato diocese. He will be away for the greater part of the year. Mr C. Cam. of Cam and Sons, Ltd., the Sydney trawling firm, has arrived in Wellington. He is investigating the prospects of opening a Wellington depot, and expects to stay about six months in the Dominion. Dr. Monnheimer, of the Dunedin hospital staff, has left for Auckland, where he will join the steamer Maimoa en route for England. He will be engaged in post-graduate work in London and Edinburgh hospitals and in Switzerland, and will return to Dunedin in the middle of next year. Mr W. D. Barron, of the administrative department of the Malayan Civil Service, arrived at Auckland by the Aorangi on Monday. Mr Barron intends to tour New Zealand as far as Bluff, and to leave from there for Australia by the Marama on December 9. The Chief Traffic Inspector, Mr H. Macintosh, will leave to-day for Australia on annual leave. While there he will visit Melbourne and Sydney to study traffic conditions and become acquainted with any new developments which may be useful in handling the problem in Christchurch. Mr E. J. Kelly, son of Mr J. S. Kelly, of Christchurch, who has been engaged in advertising work in New Zealand for the last nine years, has been appointed representative of the Goldberg Advertising Agency in New South Wales. Mr Kelly was stationed for some time in Christchurch. Mr J. E. Strachan, headmaster of the Rangiora High School, has been granted six months' leave of absence from the beginning of March, by the Rangiora High School Board of Governors, to enable him to make use of the grant offered him recently by the Carnegie Corporation to visit the United States of America, England, and the Continent to study educational matters. Dr. O. L. Eaton, of Dunedin, son of the Rev. Clarence Eaton, of the Durham Street Methodist Church, Christchurch, was welcomed by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, during its sittings in Wellington. Dr. Eaton is going to China next year as a medical missionary attached to the Presbyterian mission hospital at Kong Chuen, Canton. At a largely attended social gathering held in the clubhouse members of the Masterton Golf Club presented Mr J. P. Hornabrook with a leather suitcase in recognition of his achievement in winning the New Zealand amateur golf championship. The presentation was made by Mr H. P. Hugo, club captain. Mr K. G. Simpson, formerly on the staff of J. Ilott, Ltd., and the Charles Haines Advertising Agency, Ltd., in New Zealand, and latterly assistant to Mr Malcolm Kay, advertising manager of the Farmers' Trading Company, Ltd., of Auckland, has joined the staff of CattsPatterson Company, Ltd., in Sydney. Mr V. E. Thompson, production manager of the Goldberg Advertising Agency, Ltd., in New Zealand, has been appointed to the Sydney branch of the organisation, where he has taken over the duties of personal assistant to the governing director, Mr Frank Goldberg. Mr Thompson has travelled extensively on behalf of Goldberg's throughout New Zealand. Mr William Roy Kell, F.C.S. (N.Z.) has been appointed manager of Gordon and Gotch (N.Z.) Advertising, Ltd. Mr Kell joined that company some six years ago as secretary and office manager. Prior to that he was accountant to J. Ilott, Ltd., Wellington. Mr Kell is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Secretaries, and is chairman of the Wellington chapter of that institute. Mr Stan East, who is now one of the subeditors of the "Star," Melbourne, has had a long experience in New Zealand and Australia. Before concentrating on journalism he was an actor, and was a member of a number of wellknown companies. After being invalided back from the war he joined the "Daily Telegraph," Sydney, on which he was chief sub-editor, and when the paper was absorbed he became associated with the Sydney "Sun." In 1933 he spent a year abroad, and coming back to New South Wales went on the land. The call of journalism was, however, too strong, and being asked to join the "Star" he did so.
