SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Miss Joan Turnbull (Christchurch), who was the guest of Mrs Simon Mackenzie, "Otumarama," has returned to Mount John, Tekapo. Lady Ferguson, who was at the Grosvenor Hotel, left yesterday for Oamaru. Mrs E. Inman 'Cattle Valley), who was a visitor to Timaru, has returned home. Miss Vi. Nicholls (Maheno) has returned home after a visit to Mrs Edgar Jones, "Otiritiri." Hiss Helen Scott (Dunedin) is spending a holiday with her mother, Mrs J. M. Scott, Seddon street. Mrs E. R. Beckett (Gisborne), who was the guest of Mrs A. Jones, Beverley road, is now staying with Mrs D. C. Kidd, Single Hill, Burke's Pass. Mrs C. Martin ("Tignafelle," Wai-iti road) has returned from a visit to Maryburn. Mrs C. J. Talbot (Fairlie) is the guest of Mrs L. S. Talbot. Te Weka street. Mrs R. CARD PARTY Messrs G. K. McCaw and A. C. Boyd were in charge of the weekly euchre party held in the Aranui School in aid of the school funds. Prizes were won by Mesdames A. Williams, L. Fletcae-, Messrs G. Wheeler, G. Ford, and G. Cattermole. The prize winners at the weekly euchre party held in the Aranui Hall in aid of the hall funds were Mesdames Perrin, W. Jones, W. Spencer, Messrs F. Bodger, and W. Jones.
LADY ANDERSON Lady Anderson, wife of Sir David Murrav Anderson, Governor and Com-mander-in-Chief of Newfoundland, who is to succeed Sir Alexander HoreRuthven as Governor of New South Wales, is a New Zealander, and has many friends and relatives in the South Island. She was Miss Muriel Teschemaker, a daughter of the late Mr W. H. Teschmaker, formerly of Taipo, Marino, Oamaru, and a cousin of Mrs G. Hampton Rhodes, "Oakf ord," Riccarton Toad, and of the late Mr T. Teschemaker. She was married in 1908. Tall and handsome, with fine personality. Lady Anderson was very popular in South Africa, where her husband was stationed for many years. In 1933 he was appointed Governor of Newfoundland, and there Lady Anderson has done much good work, especially amongst the fisher folk, who have suffered terrible privations during the last few years. Her sister, Gladys, is the wife of Admiral W. D. Paton, whose home is in Suffolk. Mr Cecil Teschemaker, Lady Anderson's brother, is at present on his way to New Zealand, travelling with Commander Eric Rhodes on the Tamaroa, which is due on December 4. While in Christchurch, he will be the guest of relations and of Mr and Mrs Norton Francis, Rossall street.
GIFT PARTIES The Misses L. and M. Straw and Mrs R. Straw held an enjoyable "variety" gift party in honour of Miss Betty Nicholas, whose marriage to Mr R. J. Rundle took place yesterday. The time passed pleasantly with games and competitions, and during supper Mrs Straw presented the guest of honour with a posy of lily of the valley and roses. Those present included Mesdames R. Straw, A. J. Nicholas, L. Sutherland, Misses Betty Nicholas, L. and M. Straw, Patricia Nicholas, Vera Ramsay, Edna Kearney, Molly Stewart, E. Churchill, Nancy Ramsay, Messrs R. J. Rundle, L. Sutherland, and B. Benjes.
Mrs D. C. Pool (Dyer's Pass road) was hostess at a party given in honour of the marriage of Miss Betty Nicholas and Mr R. J. Rundle. A ping-pong tournament and cards provided entertainment for the guests, who brought gifts of preserves and pickles for the future home of the guests of honour. Among those who enjoyed Mrs Pool's hospitality were Mr and Mrs Rundle. Mr and Mrs J. Sugg, Mr and Mrs H. Woodham, and Mr and Mrs H. Fyfe, Mesdames W. E. Stickings, K. B. Jackman, E. Andrews, Misses Betty Nicholas, Pat Pool. Gloria Judkins , (Ocmaru), Gwenda Mollison, Molly Stewart, Gladys Ffye, Nell Jackman, Betty Pool, Florence Carston, Mersrs Jack Rundle, Leo Shaw, and H. Hannan.
Miss Nicholas was also entertained by one of her bridesmaids, Miss Molly Stewart, who arranged an enjoyable "handkerchief" gift party. The time was spent with competitions and items were given by Misses Beryl Emmett and Gwenda Mollison. Afternoon tea was served by the hostess. Those present included Mesdames Stewart, R. Rundle, E. Seque, A. Turner, Misses Betty Nicholas, Gloria Judkins (Oamaru), Vera Ramsay, Mavis Muschamp, Gwenda Mollison, Patricia Nicholas, Kathleen Smythe, Beryl Emmett, Ruth Emmett, Colleen Nicholas, Margot and Redmond Seque.
PLUNKET SOCIETY A committee meeting of the Cash-mere-Sydenham-Spreydon sub-branch of the Plunket Society was held in St. David's schoolroom, with Mrs P. G/ Greenwood presiding. It was decided to give £5 to the Karitane Hospital appeal. Nurse Bowron reported that in the Sydenham district she had attended 156 adults. 156 babies, and 16 older children, and at Spreydon, 86 adults, 85 babies, and 19 older children. Subscriptions were received from Mesdames O. Key, Harding, Lewton, A. Hazelton, and G. Robinson. DANCES AT AKAROA During the visit of H.M.S. Dunedin at Akaroa, two very pleasant dances were held. A very enjoyable dance, organised by the members of the Akaroa Silver Band, assisted by the Women's Institute, was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, which had been decorated With streamers and coloured shades. There was a good attendance. Messrs E. Longden and G. A. E. Le Lievre were masters of ceremonies. The Akaroa Silver Band and Mrs J. E. McNabb provided the dance music. BASKETBALL CLUB'S DANCEMembers of the Prebbleton Basketball Club entertained a large number of visitors at a dance held in the Public Hall. Les. Kinsman's orchestra supplied the dance music, and novelty dances were won by Miss Doreen Smalley and partner. Miss Violet Kolkman and Mr S. McGarry. At progressive euchre the successful players were Mrs E. Inwood, Mrs L. Harris, Mr A. Thomson, and Mr C. Chesmar. Mr J. T. Gallagher was master of ceremonies. Those present included Mr and Mrs J.
