MOTORCYCLE ROAD RACE
* APPLICATION TO COUNTY COUNCIL Opposition to the granting of an application from the Pioneer Motor Club, Christchurch, for permission to hold a road Tourist Trophy race on November 17 over a nine-mile course at Cust was voiced by members of the Rangiora County Council at a meeting yesterday, chiefly because the date proposed was a Sunday. After a discussion the letter from the club was received. The club stated that the road it was proposed to use would be ciosed for two hours at the outside. The course would be patrolled and all corners and intersections would be guarded. Tne chairman (Mr W. Stalker) was in favour of the application being granted. Cr. C. Rands: I do not think we should encourage sport on Sunday, especially when it is run on public property. As a council we should not grant permission. Cr. R. Macdonald said that as in- | dividuals they were not responsible for the doings of others. There was a difference between playing organised games and ordinary games on Sundays. Cr. H. Tallott said that he was in favour of the council giving its consent to the application. He moved that tin club be allowed to use the roads. There was no seconder to Cr. Tallott's motion and Cr. Rands moved that the application be refused. The county clerk (Mr S. G. Dalley) said that the best procedure would be to receive the letter as the council would then not have any liability if the race was held and there was an accident. Cr. Tallott contended that the club could not be stopped from using the roads as they were public property. The county clerk's suggestion was adopted.
