COST OF LEAGUE

FRENCH PROTEST MADE AND ANSWERED

AUSTRALIAN PROPOSAL CONDEMNED LONDON, September 17. The Geneva correspondent of the Associated Press states that on the ground that France and other countries were obliged to impose a 10 per cent, cut on the public servants, M. Laval, at a meeting of the budget committee, demanded that all league expenditure should be similarly reduced.

Mr C. J. Hambro (Norway), a member of the Budget Supervisory Committee, denned the league's expenditure. He said it was France who wanted a new palace. A French architect presided over the committee which was responsible for the design.

Referring to Mr S. M. Bruce's warning that countries might pay only what they considered a fair contribution, Mr Hambro said it was impossible for the league to proceed under such a system. Budgeting would be made impossible if members decided to fix their contributions according to their own ideas of fairness.
