ABOUT A CULVERT
TO TKB BDITOB 0» THE MUCBB. Sir, —Permit me space to support most heartily the protest of "AntiCouncilite" against what may well be 'ermed the tyranny of the City CounI oil in compelling ratepayers to have aide-channel crossings inserted only by the staff of the council at a cost determined by the council, and at the rate of wages paid to the employees of the council, who, during the years of depression, have been rightly called "a privileged class of workers." I use the word "tyranny" advisedly because private contractors are absolutely debarred from doing work which quite legitimately lies within their province and because ratepayers are forced to pay the council's price for the job when it can be done efficiently and to the satisfaction of the council at almost half the cost. Cr. Beanland may call the price reasonable if he chooses, but he ought to know that the work can be done, and well done, at just about half the council's price. I feel It is quite unfair for the council to force its decision in a time when everything should be done not to increase the cost of living, but as far as possible reduce it.—Yours, etc., I ANTI-TYRANNY. September 16, 1935.
