QUEEN CARNIVAL
"ORDER UNCHANGED HOPES FOR APPROACH TO £20,000 The amount raised by the Queen Carnival is now rising steadily abpve the £IO,OO0 -figure announced, on Tuesday, and it is expected by those who have watched the progress of the carnival that the final amount will be not far short of the £20,000 which it was hoped to raise. In this, the last complete week of the carnival, the, competition among the supporters of the queens is keener than ever. v Certain of the groups are understood to be keeping back reserves which will be paid in next Tuesday when the poll is to be decided; and the profits from the coronation ceremony and the carnival ball, to be held later, will also be paid into the fund. In addition, it is hoped that there will be other substantial donations before the end of the appeal. The order of the first four queens has not changed from that announced yesterday, being as follows:
Mrs Herbert Hill, commerce and public service (pale blue, No. 4). Mrs J. ft. McKenzie, racing and trotting (red, No. 6). Mrs A. L. Cropp, manufacturers and industrial (green, No. 7). Mrs Ernest Boulton, licensed victuallers, wholesalers and commercial travellers (yellow, No. 1). The other candidates are Miss Betty Cotterill, Miss Joan Cuningham, and Mrs Kenneth Ballantyne. Burlesque at Addington The burlesque trotting and bicycle carnival to be held at Addington on Saturday will be preceded by a grand procession from the, Hospital corner to the trotting grounds, in which everyone possessing a bicycle- is invited to take part. The procession will leave the corner at 1.30 p.m., and will ne led by six bands. Those who take part may wear fancy dress, and a large number of prizes for costumes have been given. Tickets of admission to the trotting grounds must be bought by every person entering the procession. The tickets will be numbered and the holder of the winning ticket will be awarded the prize of a new bicycle valued at £6 10s. An attendance of about 5000 cyclists is expected. Entries of equal completeness have been received from nine entrants in the mystery window judging competition, the prize for which is £lO 10s. It has been decided to hold a draw for the winner at a meeting of the professions' group committee in the Municipal Chambers at 5 o'clock this evening. Concert this Evening For this evening a carnival concert in the Radiant Hall has been arranged by the manufacturers' and industrial group. Some of the best talent in the city has been obtained and the programme is well varied. The performers include »Miss Ivy Fowler's school of dancing, Miss Lottie Colville, Miss Thelma Cusack, Miss Edina Graham, Miss Wilma Lang, Miss Olive Russell, Mr Bartram, Messrs Davis and Lamb, Mr H. Francis, Miss June and Mr Douglas Shephard, and Master Warwick Humphreys. During the evening the Erica Band will give special items. The concert will begin at 8 o'clock, and a splendid evening's entertainment is assured. \ Raffles Continued The success of the women's stall selling at Cranmer square last Saturday has led to the arrangement of another sale on behalf ' of the retailers' queen, Mrs Kenneth Ballantyne, on Friday evening at St. Andrew's Hall. The raffle for the painting, which may be exchanged for a motor-car, has been extended until Saturday, September 21, and will be drawn on September 25. ' The amusement alley in the tramway sheds will be open for the last time on Friday evening. This effort by the tramway sub-committee has been well rewarded, and a good attendance is expected on Friday. The last rally dance of the manufacturers' and industrial group will be held next Friday in the Alexandra Hall at 8.30 p.m. This will be a special shoppers' night. The charges will be Is 6d for men and Is, for women. The sports' group expects to have added about - £l2 to its funds by the variety and sporting programme given in the Toe H hall on Tuesday evening. Crowning Ceremony
It has been announced that the full orchestra of the Christchurch Orchestral Society, consisting, of 50 players, will play at the crowning ceremony in the King Edward Barracks on October 5. Reserves for the ceremony may be made at the D.I.C. A mistake was made at the meeting of the central executive on Monday, when it was announced that the coronation chair presented by Messrs A. J. White, Ltd., would be auctioned at the community sing on Tuesday next, and that the buyer could nominate the group to which the price paid was to be credited. The conditions under which the chair was given stipulated that the amount paid for the chair should go' to the manufacturers' and industrial group, on behalf of which it was presented. This stipulation was overlooked at the meeting.
"MYSTERY WINDOW" COMPETITION WINNING ANSWER TO BE DRAWN TO-NIGHT Satisfactory entries have been received for the "mystery window" competition, in aid of the funds of the Professions (No. 2) Group, in the Metropolitan Queen Carnival. None of the answers sent in, however, is exactly correct, but nine are almost correct, and the winning one will be'drawn from thesa at a meckng of the committee of the group at the City Council Chambers at 5 o'clock this evening. A prize of 10 guineas will be awarded the holder of the winning answer, which will be drawn by Dr. J. Guthrie. All those interested in the compaction are invited to be present at the ceremony.
COMIC SWIMMING CARNIVAL COMMERCE AND PUBLIC SERVICE GROUP A comic swimming carnival organised by the combined banks on behalf of the commerce annd public service queen, Mrs Herbert Hill, was held at the Tepid Baths last night, an entertaining programme of events being' carried through. It is anticipated that the funds of the group will benefit by about £ls: The following were the results:— Relay race—Norwich Union Insurance Company, Ltd., 1, Combined banks 2; banks' relay race: Bank of New South Wales 1, Commercial Bank of Aus'.ralit. Ltd.. 2. National Bank oh New Zealand •Ltd., 3; flag race: R. Simes I;'beer and banana race, C. S. Newton 1; ribbon race: J. Rutledge 1; obstacle race: J. Rutledge 1; clothes race: C. R. Riordan 1: women's race: Miss E. Clark 1. An exhibition of swimming was; given by J. S.- Macdonald, G. Low, and L. J. Moorhouse. and an exhibition of diving by C. R. Riordan, T. W. Thompson, J. Donaldson, L. W. Clarkson, and P. R. Smith. The starter was Mr C. Bryant
