DEBATING

RETURNED SOLDIERS' CLUB

Mr A. Rennie presided over a large attendance of members and friends at the weekly meeting of the Returned Soldiers' Association Debating Club. The evening was devoted to impromptu speaking. The subjects were set by Mrs E. W. Gimb'ett, who acted as judge. The following took part: Messrs J. Carr ("Outstanding persons of the nineteeth century"), C. T. Rodda ("Morality"), F. Williams ("A forecast of 50 years hence"), \V. T. Woods ("Leisure"), B. R. McLaren ("My favourite author"), H. J. Denton ("A chat with Mephistopheles"), T. Hartley ("Recollections"), E. W. Gimblett ("The ideal state"), W. Murpny i ("Places and people of interest"), E. Turnbull ("Masculine attire"), A. Plackburn ("How to live"), J. Sewell ("On shaving"), W. M. Sivertsen ("An excursion to Mars"), W. J. Jessett ("Where to reside"). Mrs Gimblett, who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for her valuable assistance, briefly reviewed the speeches and placed the speakers as follows:—Mr McLaren 1, Mr Woods 2, and Messrs Carr and Denton (equal) 3.

Mr A. Blackburn was host at supper. Next week the president, Mr H. E. Denton, will entertain members and their friends to a musical evening, when the Drummond Shield will be presented to the winners in the recent contest. -
