BREACH OF PROBATION For failing to comply with the terms of his release on probation, Frederick Charies; Rhodes Clark, a'labourer, aged 41 years, was sentenced to 30 days imprisonment.. REMANDED Gilbert Eldred, an elderly man, was remaS until September 24, on charges of indecent assault on a 12-year-old girl, and of carnal knowledge. MILK BELOW STANDARD Robert Harvey Clark was fined £3 and ordered to pay costs for selling milk which did not comply with the standard required. FAILURE TO NOTIFY WORK - For failing to give notice of his intention to carry out plumbing work, Arthur HoUobon was fined 10s and ordered to pay costs, on a prosecution brought by the New Brighton borough Inspector. COMPANY FINED

Alleging that employees had worked from 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., and then from 7.30 p.m. to 2 a.m., with ordinary duty the following day, Mr R. T. Bailey brought an action for the Labour Department against Beath and Company for extending the working hours of employees. Mr Bailey said that six weeks before the Officers' Ball he had discussed arrangements with the manageress of the tea-rooms, and that it was necessary for any firm to make special application to the department before employees could be worked more than three hours overtime. It was the night of the Officers' Ball, said Mr W. R. Lascelles for the defendant company, and the new tearooms had only just been completed. The company had made enquiries from the department for guidance, and the girls had been paid more than was necessary for their services. The company had provided them with meals and spells off from work. At the end of the evening all the girls had been offered taxis to take them home, but not all had accepted. Thus it was not « deliberate flouting of the regulations of the Labour Department The company was fined £2 and ordered to pay costs, and for failing to provide conveyance for assistants employed after 10.30 was fined 20s and ordered to pay costs.
