TARANAKI BEATS OTAGO NORTHERN FORWARDS PLAY WELL (PBZS3 ASSOCIATION MLHOBAM.; HAWERA, September 18. The Otago Rugby team was defeated bv Taranaki at Hawera this afternoon by 17 points to 8, before an attendance of 3000. Neither team was at full strength, but it was evident before the first half ended that once Taranaki had the wind in its favour the issue would not be in doubt. Otago's points came from two field gcals by Trevathsin, which were, equalled by Collins in the second half. Taranaki also scored two tries* and Collins kicked a penalty goal.

The teams were:— Otago—McFarland; Watt. Martin Gold; Nieper, Trevathan; Saxton; Nieven, Quaid, Murphy, Parkhill, Chap- . man, McDonald, Campbell, Laney. Taranaki—Collins; Pepperell, Richards, Sullivan; Edwards, Sangster; Dymond; Harrison, Devereaux, W. Young, R. Young, Gardner, Armstrong, Gargan, Fowler. Taranaki faced the sun and a strong "Wind, this affecting Collins's clearing kicks, and giving the visitors a decided advantage. Realising this, the Taranaki forwards kept play tight, effectively smashing any rearguard movements. The Taranaki forwards had a two-to-one advantage in the scrums and lineouts, but were frequently penalised for offside play by Harrison, the Maori representative forward, who was playing a roving game. Otago's account was opened after a quick pass from the scrum to Trevathan, who potted a neat goal, this move being repeated within five minutes, putting the visitors eight points ahead. Near half-time Sullivan broke away in a great burst, supported by Harrison and Gargan, the latter running in from the twenty-five to touch down. Otago was on the defensive all the second spell, the ball only twice passing half-way. The visitors were penalised for a scrum infringement, and Collins kicked a penalty. Edwards and Sullivan smashed gaps in the Otago back line, and were almost over several times. Collins kicked two field goals from similar moves to those of Trevathan. Sweeping aside the opposition, Richards scored in the corner after all the backs had handled, some twice. ColIjis's kick grazed the upright. ;Earlv in the second half Simon replaced Saxton behind the scrum, but he was given no chances, the Taranaki forwards breaking through on him before he got the ball away. The Taranaki forwards played well, and were a decided improvement on the last four matches. t

RANFURLY SHIELD CHALLENGERS HAWKES BAY SEEKS FIXTURE ON A WEDNESDAY (FKSIS ABSn<3iTIO» TKLSORAK.i WELLINGTON, September 18. The question of dates for Ranfurly Shield challenges K.as brought before the New Zealand Rugby Un.on to-night by the Hawke's Bay Union ■which appealed for a Wednesday fixture with the shield holders, the date suggssted being September 25. The Hawke's Bay challenge was entered within the time' specified in the rules. The present, request for the match on Wednesday meant that an opinion was being sought as to how the controlling body viewed the stand taken by the Canterbury Rugby Union in having shield matches confined to Saturdays. The New Zealand Union decided that it would not be fair to the holders of the shield to ask them to play challenge matches on Wednesdays, and decided to fox ward the challenge to the Canterbury Union from Hawke's Bay /to Canterbury for their information.
