CYCLING

ROUND-THE-GORGES* RACE HANDICAPS FOR SATURDAY Ninety entries have been received for the eighth annual Round-the-Gorges road race, which will be held by the Pspanui Amateur Cycling Club on Saturday. The event this year tarries with it the 100 miles Canterbury championship. Among those on tho scratch mark is Frank Grose, who is riding at his top form this season. Grose gained first place and fastest time in the SO miles Canterbury championship in August, and second place and fastest time in the 50 miles South Island championsh.p at Invercargill last Saturday. Bob BlakeWay, the present holder of the 100 miles New Zealand championship, and winner of the 100 kilometres Canterbury championship held recently, A. J. Lancaster, runnerup in both these events, I. J. Taylor, a much improved rider and runner-up to Grose at Invercargill last Saturday. J. L. Richards, winner of several fastest times this Beason, and L. G. Savage, winner of the Avon Olub championship, are also on the scratch mark.

The race is timed to start from the Papanui Hotel at 10.30 a.m., and will finish at the Metropolitan trotting grounds about 4 p.sn. Competitors are requesetd to be at the starting place not later than 10 a.m.

Cycling Club. Mr Field presided. It -was decided that the following prizes be allotted for the 30 miles championship:— First prise. Kennett Cup and medal; second, silver-mounted honey bowl; third, order on Jones Cycle Company; fourth, order on Buv ler Cycle Company; fastest time, blue ribbon; second fastnst time, medal. The entries will close at the Jones, Butler, and Milton Cycle Works on September 38. The secretary stated that some good prises had' been given for old timers', women's, and schoolboys' ra'ceß. Owine to the amount of interest shown in the two schoolboys' races last week it was decided to form a boys' section to the club, rnd to hold a schoolboys' championship in the near future. It was decided to Bold over the question of forming a girls' section until after the field day.
