REABSORBING THE UNEMPLOYED
ACTIONS OF BOARD DESCRIBED ' ' 9 lvaE3a ASaucivriOH TELBGKAM.; WELLINGTON, September 17. The practical steDs taken to assist industry with a view to reabsorbing the unemployed were described at a Rotary Club luncheon to-day by Mr W. Bromley, deputy-chairman of the Unemployment Board. The development of New Zealand would not be brought about by increased relief payments, said Mr Bromley, at any rate whjle the wage level remained as at present, when relief . rates were retarding the acceptance of work necessary to absorb the unemployed. It was of no use, under present conditions, to argue that the steps taken to escape from the depression might lead to a new order of things or to socialism. That would not help. Mr Bromley then outlined the stops taken by the board to assist industry," which he summarised as follows:—Assistance to the flax industry; assistance to the kauri gum industry; the institution of village settlement; development of small farms; training of boys for country life; irrigation; assistance to the timber industry, the woolpack industry, and the pottery industry.
