COAL MINING INDUSTRY
NATIONALISATION URGED BY MR WEBB HUGE SEAMS SAID TO BE ON FIRE fFrom Our Parliamentary Reporter.! WELLINGTON, September 17. The nationalisation of the coal mining industry was advocated by Mr P. C. Webb (Lab., Buller) speaking in the address-in-reply debate in the House of Representatives to-day. The great majority of coal miners, he said, were earning very little more than relief workers, and in many instances not as ;much. Men working in the Dobson mine averaged about £2 10s a fortnight. It was high time that the Government realised its responsibility to the industry. Reference was made by Mr Webb to the increase in the imports of Australian coal. Why, he asked, should the mining industry of this country be sacrificed in that way? He also said that, millions of tons of coal were being destroyed by fires, and that no effort was being made by the Government or the companies to preserve the asset. For every 100 tons of coal destroyed, from 60 to 70 tons of petrol was lost. Huge seams were on fire, and no attempt was made to check the flames and prevent the fire from reaching virgin coal.
