SOUTH AFRICAN MINISTER OPTIMISTIC
PRETORIA, September IG. "We shall shoot if attacked, but only if attacked," declared the Minister for Defence, Mr O. Pirow, referring to the statement by Mr T. te Water, South African High Commissioner, to the league regarding South Africa's co-operation in the sanctions. "While we are ready to do our duty by the league, no nation will fire a shot. Certainly South Africa does not intend to do so. I believe the war clouds will soon blow over." The Prime Minister of Southern Rhodesia, Mr G. M. Huggins. has declaimed that Southern Rhodesia would follow Britain's course regarding sanctions.
MANY VOLUNTEERS FOR ABYSSINIA SCARCELY ANY ACCEPTED
ADDIS ABABA, September 16. The Government states that 5000 Irishmen have offered to serve in the army, also 3000 Frenchmen, hundreds of British citizens, Germans, Brazilians and Russians, and scarcely any are being accepted. Those in well informed circles consider that the despatch of 12,000 additional troops to Abyssinia during the last 24 hours does not justify hopes for peace. REINFORCEMENTS FOR LIBYA DENIAL THAT SENUSSI ARE CAUSING TROUBLE (Received September 17, 11.41 p.m.) ALEXANDRIA, September' 16. Referring to Signor Mussolini's dispatch of troops to Libya,, the Egyptian Government denies that the Senussi are assembling on the frontier or fomenting trouble there.
