Reese left Christchurch for the north last evening.. The Hon. Sir It. Heaton Rhodes, M.L.C., was a passenger for Wellington on the steamer express last evening. Mr R. M. Adams, of Adams, Ltd., has returned home after spending three weeks on business in Otago. Dr. T. Maling, who left Christchurch eight years ago to continue his studies in Great Britain, returned home yesterday. Mr W. E. Dawkins, of the Dunedin staff of the Department of Agriculture, has received notice of his transfer to Christchurch. The Hon. L. M. Isitt, M.L.C., the Hon. J. A. Hanan, M.L.C., and Mr J. Connolly, M.P., were among the arrivals from the Worth Island yesterday morning. Mr Lance B. Stevens, Hamilton avenue, Fendalton, returned to Christchurch yesterday morning from a trip to Alaska, Canada 1 , and the west coast of the United States. He arrived at Wellington on Monday by the Makura. After 43 years in the service of the Bank of Australasia Mr R. N. K. Swanston will retire from the managership of the bank's Auckland branch next month. He will be succeeded by Mr G. A. Williamson, formerly assistant manager in Melbourne. Major Dry, of the' Salvation Army Home at Addington, and Major Buttermore, of the People's Palace, both of whom have held their present' rank for about four years, have received notice from the London headquarters of their promotion to the rank of Brigadier. This is Major Dry's third promotion in eight years. Mr E. E. Hooper, who for the last 44 years has been engaged in newspaper work in Hamilton and editor of the."Waikato Times" for the last 14 years, was the recipient of a handsome presentation from the directors on the occasion of his retirement from the editorship of the paper yesterday. Tributes to Mr Hooper's services in newspaper work in the town and district were paid by several speakers. His successor is Mr H. W. Nixon, formerly associate editor and commercial editor of the "Christchurch Times" and more recently commercial editor of the "Star-Sun." Advice that Dr. Bright Bannister, of London, who was elected vice-president of the section of obstetrics and gynaecology at the Melbourne Medical Conference just concluded, will make a four weeks' tour of New Zealand has been received by Dr. Doris Gordon, of Stratford, president of the New Zealand Obstetrical Society. Dr. Bannister will arrive in Auckland on September 21 and will be the guest of the society while in the Dominion, He will lecture at Auckland, Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin,. and Invercargill, and will spend a week in the Southern Lakes district.—Press Association. A meeting of the directors of the United Press Association yesterday carried the following resolution, on the motion of Mr A. M. Burns, seconded by Mr W. J. Blundell: "That the directors extend their heartiest congratulations to the chairman, Sir Henry Horton, on receiving the honour of knighthood from his Majesty the King in recognition of his distinguished services, as a citizen and as a journalist, to the people of New Zealand, and that a letter be sent conveying the good wishes : of the board to Sir Henry and Lady Horton." The motion was" supported on behalf of the provincial press by Mr T. M. Geddis.—Press Association.
