PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT FOR AUGUST

The librarian of the Canterbury Public Library (Mr Ernest J. Bell) reports that during August 17,651 books were issued from the circulating d«r parlment, a slight decrease compared with August last year. New members enrolled reached a total of 71. New books added to the circulating library numbered 151. In the reference library excellent use was made of the books and periodicals provided. A total of _ 14,529 works were consulted this being 13 more than the total for August last year. To this department' were added 24 useful volumes. The children's, library was exceptionally busy and ?349 books were issued for home reading, cOtapared with 3797 for August, 1934. The membership now stands at 2117. Sixty-seven books were added during the month.
